Which GPSs are known to work with tyre?

Guys,

First post here, don't own a GS but you boys are clued up on your touring!

I need to buy a GPS, and I want the ability to pre-plan my own routes in mapping software.

I have heard TYRE is the tool to use for this, but open to other suggestions

My brother bought a Garmin unit that supposedly stored routes but it turned out not to work in the end.

He bought a used TomTom Rider in the end.

I have heard of various issues with tomtoms, poor charging mounts, having to select that you have passed a waypoint to carry on with your pre planned route, no itinerary support on the newest models?

Seems to be a bit of a minefield when it comes to selecting a GPS that isn't going to be flawed in one way or another.

I have no issue with buying second hand or brand new, just want it to be the right model for what I want to use it for!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

our garmin nuvi works just fine with tyre.

Which Garmin Nuvi model specifically? I've looked at the 550 but seems expensive.

I use a Zumo550 with Mapsource on the PC or Basecamp on my Mac. Seems to do everything pretty well in itself although I find Mapsource easier than Basecamp to use.

Couple more questions...

Does mapsource work as well as Tyre for pre-planning routes?

Does anyone know the lowest garmin car model that supports mapsource?

I want a cheap but reliable solution!

I am happy to help please find below the devices that have the feature to take routes created from MapSource or basecamp and then sent over to the device. If the device has LMT , LM , LT or T on the end of the model numbers below will also be compatible. I am afraid that the device listed below are the only ones that are compatible with routes being sent over.

I can confirm that my Rider V2 works with TYRE.

I can also confirm the other points you have mentioned about the Rider.

I currently run a Nuvi 765T, works with Mapsource, Basecamp, ITN Converter and TYRE.

The downside with using a Nuvi is that you need to rig up your own waterproofing and bike power, did mine for about £35 using an Akron case and a power lead from Amazon. My Nuvi cost £115 new and does pretty well what a Zumo 660 will with a few minor exceptions on things like linking a phone via Bluetooth with is not a problem for me. Links in with my Autocom for directions and music, very happy with this set-up.

The 765T is not a current model but they do come up on eBay. If buying used make sure to get an assurance from the seller that they will de-register with Garmin. This will allow you to register the GPS in your name to obtain mapping updates. These are not free, a tough over £50 buys you what's called Lifetime Updates, this is for the life of the GPS not you... Four updates a year usually.
