In respect to either mineral or synthetic oils, which has the lowest flash point?

As I have just had to remove the oil from my GSA to air freight it back to the UK, I'm just curious.

Thanks

My R1100s went over the pacific on a plane and they never woried about the oil. My GSA went over the Darien Gap and they didn't care either. That's mad. I reckon it would be damm near impossible to ignite cold engine oil. Was it the shippers or the airline that asked you to take it out?

I don't know the flash point but I doubt that is what they are worried about. I would say that they arnt keen on having oil leak all over the floor. JJH

Monkeyboy,
It was requested by the shipper, who follow the airlines procedures.

As evidence, it was just the gearbox oil removed as I did not want the hassle of removing the bash plate.

a lot less volatile than 30 bazillion gallons of jet fuel stored in neaby proximity in the wings :mmmm

With used engine oil it would be down to contamination from what gets past your piston rings, once lit oil would burn, if it 'flashed off' I recon you would be in serious need of a rebore, handy tip, if you really must experiment with this one domestic bliss can be maintained by doing it outdoors.......and watch your eyebrows:augie
