Two bikes
- the newer one has had the followers done (so it says - any way to know other than paperwork or taking it apart?)
- the older one has the previous engine so 'should' have no cam issues and is very low mileage
almost the same money

Any guidance and info gratefully received from those in the know as its a long way to go see them

You need proof that the 8v tappets have been done, if they have it’s probably the best bike although the older engine is bulletproof , it’s a buyer’s market this time of year I’ve had a Guzzi for sale for 4 months now

Not sure I can guide you but I owned one just like the 4v black one a few years ago and it was a lovely bike. Plenty of power and a a good amount of torque for 'get-up-and-go'. Makes a really nice sports tourer and I took it to Europe on longer trips a few times with mates on more modern bikes with no bother at all.

The 8v engine (I believe) gives you more top end, so if that's important then maybe that's the one. To be honest, the 4v engine goes perfectly well and I never felt it had a lack. If you are seriously considering the 8v then make sure there is documented proof that the followers were done. I think to those who know - you can see the follower change by taking off the valve cover and looking in the right area (help here from anyone else who knows better than me?).

The original exhaust is on the black one too. That's the correct end-can for that year of V1200. It tends to rust out the spot welds at the back of the hanger bracket - not any warning and happened to me late one summer evening which needed some 'cobbling together ' to get home. Not sure why you prefer the original pipe - I bought a Mistral which was much lighter and sounded lovely (not too loud with baffles in).

Miss my V1200 Sport - you'll really enjoy whichever one you choose I'm sure.

Yes you need to physically check that it’s got roller tappets by removing the cover, there were upgrades to the flat tappets before rollerisation, they both have stock silencers the 4v came with the cf item, the other thing to check is the shock linkage for grease they seize up

Neither do based on age and mileage.
The 2012 has more history and info
The 2008 seems like its hardly turned a wheel in sometime

This would be a second bike for sunday trips to starbucks in leather jacket and jeans only !

Thanks for the feedback and help

@guzzisteve - is yours the Ballabio 2005, with the video from Speed Superbikes?

One question is how much damage was done before the followers were upgraded? Hopefully they were changed early on at very low mileage.

Ask for proof that the roller conversion was done, there was a tappet recall on the early 1200s that some people/dealers think is the rollerisation but it is not.

Re the difference between the two I can only base it on ownership of the 1100 Griso and seat time on a rollerised 1200 Griso but personally I think the 1200 is a much nicer engine

I have a video of me and my mate riding the 1100 and 1200 together where you can see the difference - but I have posted it so many times on here I would be embarassed to do it again :-)

silver one , 8v .
it's a 10 min job to take off the rocker cover and have a look , and send me a picture . he says he has paperwork , check it. i would want to look it it was me ! ( i never issued paperwork for this , but i would put it in the service book )
if it hasn't been done ...budget £1500 off the price.
quite noisy when you start them , should go quiet in 10 secs .
has had a new speedo drive fitted , cos the wire should be hidden away behind the fork leg , or fork seals have been done ? ( look at the black one for correct routing )
H+Becker panniers fitted , i have these on mine.

black one 2v
std silencers were pretty but had a fault ...they crack the mount and....fall off . has a mistral fitted .
IMHO possibly the best engine guzzi have made .
i'm on my 2nd 1200 Sport 2v .
std panniers , funny shape , not waterproof.

things for both bikes
2 keys coded to the dash . THIS IS IMPORTANT , NOT 1 KEY WITH A 2ND CLONED . or have 1 key and the code ( user code not service code ) , you can add more keys @ £90 a key .
knuckle , https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/part...lpj20-zgulpr00-zgulpr01-zgulpj01-2006-2013-12
part number 3 these need looking at and greasing , easy to change @£220 , if you can get all the bolts out.
drinks fuel@ 40-50 mpg so 240 m/tank if not in town , town work drops to 35-40 mpg .
look up click no start , easily fixed with a fuse holder and 15 mins work. look for a quality fuse holder off the battery going to a relay direct.
water in the dash ? it has had the dash changed under warranty , cos it is black not white .
bubbles in paint caused by ethanol in fuel , tanks get bigger !
headlights are ok in the dark but not brilliant .
these are a guzzi vfr , they don't do anything brilliantly , they do it all well , if that makes sense .
top speed about 135 , but will do 80 all day long.
seats get a bit poor after 10-12k miles
easy to live with , not exciting ....but fun !
change exhaust nuts to SS acorn nut , stock ones will go rusty and look horrid.
torque arms , check front bush is a silent-block bush , if not you will be " feathering " the clutch at low rpm , it will " clack" below 3k.

not had a guzzi before , get an hours ride first , it will be love or hate .

price is down to you
Motorbiking don't sell shit bikes , he sells quality
Guy is the boss , but has a partner ...i think ,
they have a tidy workshop.

Hi Johnny. They are both lovely bikes. In my opinion one of the nicest modern classics, lovely bikes to ride.
Downside to the 1100, it does have some rather nasty paint bubbling on the tank due to the ethanol in the fuel. It is very difficult to successfully rectify. This can be seen if you watch the walk around video in the ad.
The 1200 looks lovely and if the tappets have been rollerised it should be no problem. If it's been officially documented then it should have been done. Personally I would want to see it in the flesh.
It's very easy too determine. Ask the to remove either valve cover. At the side nearest the tank or the top of the head you will see two cam lifters they are at the very top of the head nearest the tank.
When looking down at these you will see that there is a circle between the two arms. If you can see an almost complete circle in the casting and holes about as big as an old half pence, it has not been rollerised. If you can see two holes about as big as a 1 pence piece and the circle in the casting has almost been removed by the holes, it has been rollerised. If it has the conversion you can actually see down the holes and see the rollers.
If you do purchase one of them it is worthwhile stripping the back end to enable you too grease the swingarm bushes and the suspension linkages.
Personally I slightly prefer the look of the 1100 motor, but when sorted the 1200 is actually the better motor.
If they don't want to send you pics, this would make me a little suspicious.
I'm not sure if this would be your first Guzzi Johnny, but if it is, be very very careful. It won't be your last.
I hope this is of some help.

Wow gents - thank you both ever so much for the detailed information and help.
I have never bought anything ‘exotic’ before - this would be a first Guzzi for me when I find the right one.
I want something with character - with smiles.
I’m not interested in performance anymore.

It could have had yours Wrinkley but you decided to keep it ! 😉
