Which NAS?

I want to add a network attached storage device at home for a Win32 and Linux box (His and hers) and it needs to be quiet.

Can anyone recommend a NAS that has no connectivity issues with CIFS and SMB or even better a NAS case I can just plug a couple of old 3.5" IDE drives into?

I had a Netgear one once, in fact I still have it in the junk pile. It was amazingly slow.

Not quite meets the spec that you're looking for, but I've been using a QNAP 209 II Pro for a few months and think it's brilliant.

Takes SATA drives, but when 1TB drives cost £80..........

I have 2 drives mirrored.

Excito's bubba server would fit the bill. The original server takes IDE drives.

Really, really brilliant, 10W consumption and as noisy as a hard drive - i.e. not very.

got any old hardware lying about? if so try freenas

I have it running on an old 400mhz celeron with 128mb ram. I got a heatsink that was way overrated for the processor and replaced the huge fan with a 40mm one running at 7 volts. Resulted in a pretty quiet nas box. Been up for 20 days without a problem. Best of all it's pretty much free if you have the bits lying around, the freenas software is free too.

Now that I like! I have been seriously downsizing these last few weeks and managed to unload a Netfinity server on a neighbour last weekend All I have left now is a 2 Gig P4 with a Gig of RAM left, I have a feeling that is an overkill and I want something small and quiet but it is worth looking at, does it work the CPU much? I could always try it without a CPU fan and bung it in a cupboard....

It doesn't seem to work the CPU too much, mine handles everything i can throw at it with ease. The hardware you've got defiantly overkill.

I'd leave the processor fan on and stick it in the cupboard once it's setup you’ll never hear it and you can do everything you need to do over the network.
