Hi!

Looking at purchasing a GSA (doing my homework!) and the biggest question I've got is should I go for the BMW alu panniers (NOT the vario) or the Touratech ZEGA cases, or sommat else?:nenau

Not sure if there are any benefits of one over another but I've heard that the ZEGA cases are a PITA to fit, and the BMW ones are still made by touratech anyway?

All advice appreciated!

Have a look at the Jesse panniers.

Plenty of capacity and quite narrow on the bike compared to others, easy on / off and don't leave a load of scaffolding on the side of the bike when panniers are off.

There is a guy in Germany who supplies them.

Depends what sort of journeys you are thinking of.

I bought the BMW ones and am quite happy with them but I think if I was going to be off roading across continents then I'd go for something more heavy duty like Touratech.

I'm predominantly a road rider but intend some gentle off road stuff so reckon the BMW stuff will suffice

Standard BuMW ones seem to do just fine.

Easy to put on.

Easy to take off.

Fit well.

Don't seem to fly off.

You might find he's not doing the Jessie's now. I got a message from the European importer in February saying He no longer supplied the Jessie's. However Jessie's will send them direct.

SWMBO has just bought a 650 with Jessie's fitted. They look very strong and functional, giving about one third more space than the 650 Vario panniers.

Personally I opted for Caja Sehal panniers on my 1200 to replace my Varios.

If I'd have bought the ADV I would probably have specked the OE ally ones and been happy with them as they are.

I'll second that. Excellent inner bags from BMW are also well worth getting.

I`ve got standard ADV ones and they are excellent and do the job.

Have a look at Vern`s if you want something different and a bit cheaper:thumb

panniers

ARD CASES, by redcap of this parrish,
hand made to your design, i have a set and quite honestly for the money i aint seen better,i think he sells for about £300, a TTframe is a little over £200 which is alot less tha n the bmw ones which are just bean tins by comparrison/

Standard Alums...

Got the Standard Alum BMW ones.... after years of touring with soft panniers, I really like these. Plenty of space, incredibly easy to take off and put on and look great on the 2008 GSA. :)
Only thing that lets them down.... no handles.... so they literaly are just boxes. Might make em a bit annoying to lug around when full.
BMW do sell handle straps but after having spent loads buying the bike the piggy banks empty. I think a christmas gift to myself is in order.

Because their capacity is not huge they encourage a disciplined approach to packing. I also use a tank bag (the large BMW one) for light stuff and stuff I need easy access to (maps, documents, phone/PDA, toll money) and an Ortlieb roll bag (for alternative m/c jacket etc) strapped across the seat and secured to the panniers.

The one-key system is brilliant!

Had the BM tin boxes, good bit's of kit, but way OTT on the engineering for the plastic corners etc etc. Nice to have the one key approach and easy on / off option.

Now got the TT "special" set. More sensible space, easy enough to get on / off, just as watertight. No problems getting on / off the bike (like with the H & B ones), and no problem for Eronbak with either set either.

Just out of interest, does anybody carry the pannier around instead of using inner bags :nenau

I've got a Metal Mule full set on mine. Pricey but bloody brilliant.

I went for Caja Sahel and dropped the bike with them fitted.

They saved the holiday (with scratches).

newbie here!

whats the difference between the BMW ones and touratech ones? i thought touratech made them for BMW?

slighlty confused, is ther per chance a thread or post with the different types show in picture form?

anyway back to reading Verns page about warranties, going to show it to my MD to see if we can get away with it?

BM badged ones lock on / off easily, look overly complicated as there's lots of welding to make the corners chamfered. BM claim to have not many spare parts as they don't make them :o but at least now they do spare plastic corners. Made by TT but have BM part numbers and cost.

TT badged ones, plain box, don't remove quite as quickly.

Not tested the crashworthiness of either pair, but both have / were watertight in my experience. BM ones did have "issues" with corrosion in the past, but as it's "summer" now, I don't recall seeing any complaints recently
