So its coming up to Christmas adn I need to find something for the other half to buy me for a prezzie otherwise its anyone's guess what I'll get.
Thinking about a satnag for the car, had TomTom for years (Since the original Go) been through the 520, 720 and currently 930, bought the wife a Start 25 which benefits from Lifetime Maps.
For the bike I'ver gone the Garmin route, Quest 550 and now a 390.

Do I go Garmin or Tom Tom, both seem to have models that have Lifetime Maps which is a defo for me.

The latest Tomtoms seem to enjoy a different interface which I don't think I would have trouble getting my head round but the Garmin bike models have some nice features (ie the download trip data functions) not sure if they have similar on the car models - anyone got any experience?

I can do without some of the tt 930 features - I don't need voice command or telephone functions.

Any experience of particular models, likes and dislikes?

Having looked at the various options/reviews I'm going to go for the Tom Tom Rider 400EU. A few places are doing them for £235 with a free car kit (by redemption). I might have gone for the older Rider version but I want the traffic option of the 40/400 series (needs to link with your phone). The disadvantage when touring abroad is the high cost of data for traffic but I'll be in France/Spain/Italy and my Three contract doesn't cost any more than at home (which is unlimited data).

The Garmin just pips the Tom Tom in the ride mag review

I have a Garmin for the bike & an old Tom Tom for the previous car. The Tom Tom is much more user friendly & takes one on far more reasonable routes. Had the Garmin not been 'free' when I bought the bike I would definitely have gone for a Tom Tom.

If it's for the car I'd get a TomTom no question. Easier to use, sensible routing and better value. If however you want more control over your routes I'd go for Garmin and Base camp, it has it's faults but they are overcome with practice.

GARMIN 2519 LM

Just bought this for daughters birthday, well impressed, comes with lifetime maps for around £100, if you have any Tesco clubcard vouchers you can double these up at the moment on tesco direct, balance was £8 for me.:thumb

I have a TT 400 EU and since the software update, it does the job as well as I would expect(having always had TTs ). The RIDE mag commented on the requirement for a PC to plan routes and load them. This is now not true, there is an app - Myroute that runs on all mobiles / tablets etc.
Only other comment is that route planning on the TT requires a device with google maps loaded whereas the garmin uses device maps in the planning tool.
