I can well believe it - I got caught out on an earlier bit of the Ridgeway with a "puddle" that was much deeper than it looked - I had a good poke around with a stick when I got to "Barbury Lake" - and then went around it like everyone else appeared to have done anyway - hardcore

Blowzorn and I got there yesterday evening and although the water level had gone down quite a bit since last time I was there...

I said "This might be deep so I'm going around it on the left".

Blowzorn said "I'm going around it on the right - that way looks easier" and off he went.

Sod's law took effect















I had to ride through the lake anyway then to help him pick the bike up

What a top night.
Only spent about an hour in the saddle but my body aches like I've been at the bottom of an All Blacks rolling maul.
Can't wait to do it again in a fortnight.
Next week will be a more genteel run to the coast (Well Poole harbour) post and invite to follow.

In case I can't, could you let me have a copy of your GPS file (I have a Quest but it must be possible to read other files) or is it posted somewhere else on this forum?

I've only entered the waypoints so far - when I finish the proper route I'll post it up on this thread - I'll try and remember to put it in GPX format which you should be able to read.

Those two Fords at Ramsbury lead onto a Bridleway that the owner of one of the cottages (in the background) claims is a Footpath

If anyone from the south coast is going on this one and wants to meet on route i will be riding up from Eastbourne most likely A23 M23 M25 M4 so i dont have to get up too early let me know .

(NOT the Total filling station which is the first one you see if coming into Hungerford from the M4)

Short drink/fag/photo stop at the sites/sights on the route with a Lunch stop at the pub in the centre of Avebury (if we leave on time this will be around 1.30pm - note to self: find out when they stop serving lunch)

There are a couple of (optional) green lane (Ridgeway) sections in the Avebury area that I can incorporate into the route as required.

Depending on numbers it will be the drop-off system so I'll be looking for a tail-end

The route, as a GDB and GPX file, is in the attached .ZIP

Rob, could join you somewhere on the M25 after junction 7 I guess. Any suggestions on where and when ?

There are a couple of (optional) green lane (Ridgeway) sections in the Avebury area that I can incorporate into the route as required.

Just to clarify - the day will be a road ride of approx 150 miles.

The route and Mapsource shows the 3 mile section from Rockley to Barbury Castle as a "road" but it is in fact a (fairly easy) Byway. If, on the day, people don't fancy the Byway there is a "proper" road route.

Similarly, for those that want to, there is a Byway (part of the Ridgeway) that runs from The Sanctury (near Avebury) past Hackpen White Horse and then on to Barbury Castle.

Just past Wilton Windmill Mapsource thought this was a road and had routed me down it...

A typical part of the Byway from Rockley to Barbury Castle
