I want to attach a small plasic box to the side of my instument cluster.
I'm reluctant to start drilling holes for self-tappers etc.

I was thinking some of those glue blobs that are used to attach CDROMs to the cover of magazines would do the trick. They seem to hold well, but come off relatively easily when required and without leaving marks

Are there different types, what are they called and can they be bought in small quantities?

Sikaflex:thumb2 (But that might be a little too permanent)

Or as Shtum says dual lock is very effective and removable:thumb2

Double sided tape, the stuff with about 0.5mm of foam between, it it's good enough to hold car number plates on, then it will hold a small plastic box in place.
This has held my bathroom mirror in place for several years, as well as holding an aluminium label on the inside of the plastic guards on a CNC milling machine, that was subjected to getting covered in slurry.

Another vote for double sided trim tape or the dedicated bits they sell for attaching car number plates :thumb2

My vote would go to the 3m dual lock as well.....I used to fit control boxes to washing machines (long ago in a distant life) and that as the only stuff that you could really rely on, although if the surfaces were 100% prepared properly and de-greased (nail varnish remover or similar, and applied carefully with no contact with fingers on sticky faces) the double sided foam pads that Eliminator mentioned were pretty good.

The 3m stuff is easier to remove when you want to though, by sliding a razor blade/stanley knife blade under them...they're stiff enough to be able to be levered off, then the glue can be removed with appropriate solvent...the foam pads, once stuck properly, are a total bugger to get off DAMHIK:blast

Last thought...the 3m pads are re-usable and not ugly to leave in place if you wanted to take the box off temporarily.
