Whoops I forgot

New HES fitted and all ok apart from oil leak from left hand cam chain tensioner plunger just needed a new washer I think the heat effected it but runs ok.i need to set the timing tried the strobe lamp through the hole can't see any marks any ideas I have a manual but it uses a locking pin in flywheel and bmw tool to set HES .ive had bike over 10 years and have never touched the setup only ever done oil and filters as it always runs perfect like clockwork .are the timing marks very clear ? I think I'll post new thread

Did you take any photos of the Old HES unit?

Not very Clear and Just a Heads up the TDC mark does not align with the locking pin!

Guy I sold my first 1150 too, did exactly the same thing. Cooked the engine, he had to replace it!!

In relation to the OP. Is their a concern being stuck in standing traffic with the engine ticking over. My bike is a 2010 GSA, purchased in October14, so not been in that situation yet.
Any advice on this please.
(I had a search for a related thread with no luck re my bike)

I'm sure others on here have their own thoughts on this. Mine is to switch the motor off if I can see the oil temp pips rising much above normal and it's clear I won't be moving away 'soon'. But if the ambient temp is that hot you won't want to sit astride an additional heat source for too long yourself!

Just be sensible. Just keep an eye on it and as much air moving over it as possible.

Feels a bit odd talking about over heating in the middle of winter and minus temperatures!

Thanks for that. As you say it gives a warm feeling in this freezing weather..:thumby:

I wouldn't worry about over heating when riding. I've been in traffic from moncaco to la lavendu in the south of France and someplace in souther Spain when it's been 45 degrees in the shade. Even in heavy traffic it wasn't a problem. Yet the bike got warm but with filtering I never stopped for more than a few minutes and as soon as you start moving all will be well again.

I have been down a sandy river bed, around 40C in the shade, first and second gear WIDE OPEN to stay on top of the sand, it got so hot it was ticking over at around 2000rpm +? distorting throttle bodies or whatever I dont know... but it survived...

Not my 1150, but an indication of conditions...

Well the bike made it to the dragon rally and back ok 500+ miles no issues only problem I've got is battery is on way out now knocks out the clock first start in cold weather and ABS I think it was when ign was left on for hours after I cooked it shame as it was only a couple of months old and a exide gel.and both fork seals have gone now.

The only time it's ever been a concern for me was a couple of years ago on my 1100. We came up on a solid traffic jam on an autobahn. Up until that point we'd been cruising for a couple of hours at 85mph or so and we came down from that speed to a standstill almost instantly. All the built up heat then has nowhere to go and the bike got pretty hot (about 8 bars) and rattled like a b'stard (my mate's TC also got hot but not as bad as mine). We were just stop and go crawling and there was no way through the traffic. I was just on the point of bailing out to the hard shoulder and turning it off for a while to cool down when we finally managed to filter through a gap and get moving.

It cooled back down to normal once were on the move and ran fine thereafter but had developed a slightly noisy right hand cylinder head. It was fine on throughout the rest of the holiday (alps etc) and when I got home I checked the right hand head. The exhaust valve clearances had opened up but there was no other damage to the head or cam. I reset them and it was fine until I part exed it just before Christmas.
