Question - can I top up the oil and forget about it?

if so - which oil should I use  (all answers on a postcard to Tarka :green gri )

if not - what will I need to do and how much will it cost?

Just top it up with 20W50 - it'll be fine :augie:

BMW say that the FD is sealed for life (after the first 600 mile oil change) and needs no maintenance.
The life of yours is now over:D.
Is it within the miserly 2 year warrantee?
If so insist on a complete relacement FD and not some quick fix oil seal. The FD is a critical item and will be damaged if worked with no\low lub.
Good luck.

How many miles ago did you change the FD oil?:augie
I bought a spare FD just in case :thumb2

Is that £782 the parts only price or does it include fitting?
Who did you buy your new eBay item from??:clap

Yeah Narcoda, I'm a lifelong pessimist by nature, however I seem to recall a post a while back that someones 1200 was stolen, and didn't Nadeems bike also get attacked by some would be thieves resulting in damage ?? Agreed, it's a damned good idea to have a spare FD if your bike is a 'keeper', mines had two fitted under warranty, but I wouldn't personally buy parts if I suspected they weren't from a 100% legit source for fear of providing a market for bike theft.

I'm not trying to suggest you or Chris or anyone else are willingly promoting the receipt of stolen goods, I just recall various motorcycle magazines findings that stolen bike parts often get punted on ebay. For this very reason I got a datatool microdot set and security marked all the major components on my bike to hopefully deter some scrotes from robbing it and breaking for parts.

I got it from a privateer 'not a dealer' It's a bit of a long story realy. I won the diff New and unused for £185 including postage. But before the guy could post the thing he uped and Died :( After about three months of tentetive communication with his widow and PayPal I finaly it and ended up only paying £75.00

Not if someone stole your bike and put your FD from it up for sale. Be careful you aren't unnecessarily promoting the thieving scum.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your bike, I always dread the day that happens to me :(

This guy checked out ok (100% etc) The FD even still had the zip ties in place to prevent the bearings from comming apart and not a mark on it. Never been fitted to anything. I felt a bit guilty chasing it once I found out he'd passed away, but it was money I couldn't afford to loose. Plus the nagging susspicion that it was a roose.

Val.

It's alright Val, thankfully it wasn't my bike that was stolen but like you I feel sorry for anyone that loses their pride and joy to the theiving scum, hence my post about a market for stolen bits on ebay.

Blimey! Not only have you benefitted from the theft of someone's pride and joy, you then benefit even more when the seller dies and you offer his grieving widow less thanhalf price!

:D :D
