Stupid question I'm sure, so I expect I'll get plenty of abuse for this :blast

Where does the extrta 30kg come from? Thats the difference in dry weight if I remember correctly, so I presume its not the extra fuel. Crash bars don't look that heavy. Spoked wheels as standard so I guess they are heavier than alloy but surely that doesn't add up to 30kg?

The real question IS the GS really 30kg lighter than the ADV?

It's 20kg from the website, but just as a guess:

Larger, heavier tank and accompanying plastics.
Crash bars.
Head protectors.
Longer suspension components.
Spoked wheels.
Pannier fixings, perhaps?
Larger screen and associated aero.
Does the GS have the bash plate on the underside?

Most of those won't be much, but I imagine they add up.

It's even lighter than that when you add on metal pannier rails, rack and metal luggage.
And that's not including all the 'adventure' bling peeps put on them............:augie

... Suspension is heavier, tank and screen etc

... But I also remember reading that the ADV has a heavier rear sub-frame, presumably to accommodate the heavier <STRIKE>tosser</STRIKE> luggage

I ve measured my fully panniered, bash plated, longer screened plain jane GS vs a mate's ADV and they difference was 19kg. If you take into account the 13lt of extra fuel (20vs 33 I think), then the odd 6kg left over against the ADV is nothing and could be attributed to heavier panniers, & different tyres/wheels (although I m pretty certain the adv spokie rims are lighter than my alloys)...

The actual weights were 260/240kg if memory serves right (without riders), but fully topped up for touring. I remember we commented that with both our pillions, each bike would top 400kg or half the weight of a small car...

According to the spec on the BMW site the ADV is 20kg heavier (dry weight), so most of the items mentioned would probably add up to this.

panniers would not be included in the dry weight.

Because when you make a bike for "off road" everybody knows that you make it heavier and taller because that makes it easier to ride off road ? just look at most pictures posted on here of bikes on their side and I recon most are the heavier taller ones. All competition bikes are far heavier than standard bikes with bigger screens ect. As the people who ride them are so skilled they dont need to ever put a foot down (hence the taller suspension) when off road they just ride them like a crosser ? and when riding around the UK on a sunday there are no petrol stations for at least 300 miles. now wheres my booze !

It's to make sure that anyone who buys one has to buy superlight tents and titanium cookwear to offset the bloat :augie

This is just plainly wrong.... poo..

Lightness is key in motorsport and off road racing. Ask any motocrosser or Dakar racer for christ sake...

GS's are supposedly good in long distance touring with capacity to do the odd (light) dirt track/mountainpass that super tourers can't...

GS's are only marginally better at that than road bikes and are no good whatsoever for proper off roading/trialing or Dakar type races where a London bus would probably be better!
