Just wondering if Airheads are so good why are none left as standard?

I may be wrong but every Airhead that comes up for sale seems to have quite a lot of alterations/parts added to them:nenau

.....

Mine can be standardised in 10 mins :)
Just change to original seat and tank, which are in my barn.
reason for using bigger seat and tank is I'm no twiggy, and I like my comfort 2 up :rob

Ahh... quite a few 1150's 1200's come up bog standard but a lot of Airhead owners/sellers seem to always claim their bike is standard and make it some sort of Big Deal when it seems most are far from standard.

Completely original brush for sale only Four new heads and six new handles

Mines a standard 87 PD apart from:

The cam
The barrels
The gear ratios
The head light
Bars
Grips
Switch gear
Levers
Twist grip
Instruments
Location of relays
The fuel tank
The front forks
The rear subframe
The footpegs
The coils
The mono lever
The rear shock
The rear wheel off set
The frame

So in reality it's a mint standard PD with just a few tweaks, and nothing like those 1200's with TT light guards and sidestand extenders

I've always compared my G/S's to a Series III Land Rover...then along came the Discovery ( 1100-1150) then Land Rover fecked it up with the unreliable Freelander ( 1200's).

You never see a standard series III these days...20 odd years takes its toll

Good subject for discussion though:thumb2

Who would want standard one? Unless its an Alan (Minter). Its also one of the few bikes that it IS possible to make it better and your "own" without fecking it up or turning it into a comedy bike (A la Harley Davidson, the only bike owners wear a disguise to ride). If we have to explain it, you don't understand.

So does that mean the airhead is poor bike in standard original trim and needs fettling and parts to get it to perform/handle?

My question remains why do people drool at the mouth at bikes that say they are original and in standard trim :nenau

Is it some sort of snobbery/oneupmanship?

Also for the amount of hardcore Airhead owners on here i don't see too many being used for any longish journeys or everyday use... does that not show a lack of faith of the bikes comfort/abilities?

Most of mine are standard and the others you would probably not know the difference...if I replace a battery these days I always buy the dry type, (i.e. Hawker).

Standard has always been best with Airheads especially in the area of the exhaust system.......stainless is good buy it doe not quite have the same sound as the OEM stuff.

You would, I hope drool over a standard R90S or early R100RS

This is one I slightly modded earlier ( still have nightmares cutting up a g/s :( ) Although I do look

Went like stink...and still blagging around North Wales :thumb2

Airheads really don't do it for me at all.... actually none of the 1100's 1150's or 12's have any great appeal in standard form.

What i do like is a Bike that looks purposeful... a really well kitted out bike that is actually used for RTW or offroad really impresses me.... i like the odd good paint scheme too.
