Yarkto, let leedude03 work through it at his own speed, please. If he can, he can. If he can’t, he can’t.
This has been a good thread, with two people (yourself and leedude03) working to try to sort Lord Snooy’s problem problem out. Let’s keep it that way please, not least as Lord Snooty now seems to have a 660 with some functioning maps. The question in post #58 can be answered (or not) any time, as it’s not a race.
Post #58 has two things in it, which maybe need separating out into a separate thread or even threads.
1. As I read it, it’s a fundamental amendment (removing files to save space) of a now quite old device to stop using Garmin maps but instead, to use Open Street Maps (OSM).
It would be great if Yarkto could start a fresh thread on this, with step-by-step instructions on how to do this safely, maybe with some screen shots, not least as a part seems to involve removing or taking away bits of the device’s original files. Though I know pretty well how GPS devices work, this would be well above my pay grade but, with clear and reliable instructions, I’d give it a go, if it was as way to keep a good device functioning.
One question though. When I had a 660 and BMW’s equivalent model, I used to load Open Street Maps of the whole of France, Belgium and Germany onto an SD card, from memory, using nothing more that Garmin’s Map Installer. Why does it now require tampering with the 660’s internals? Does the simple method from the past no longer work?
2. Leedude has been asked to run an experiment. If he can at some point run it and let us know the result, great.
Thank you.
