Why won't it see the mapping file?

in answer to the question, No i would not be able to do what you ask of in #58 due to other commitments Sorry.

sorry you find the fact that i am working and unable to do what you ask of me straight away disappointing, please accept my apologies, but i do have other things to take care of and can not just drop things to suit.

Yarkto, let leedude03 work through it at his own speed, please. If he can, he can. If he can’t, he can’t.

This has been a good thread, with two people (yourself and leedude03) working to try to sort Lord Snooy’s problem problem out. Let’s keep it that way please, not least as Lord Snooty now seems to have a 660 with some functioning maps. The question in post #58 can be answered (or not) any time, as it’s not a race.

Post #58 has two things in it, which maybe need separating out into a separate thread or even threads.

1. As I read it, it’s a fundamental amendment (removing files to save space) of a now quite old device to stop using Garmin maps but instead, to use Open Street Maps (OSM).

It would be great if Yarkto could start a fresh thread on this, with step-by-step instructions on how to do this safely, maybe with some screen shots, not least as a part seems to involve removing or taking away bits of the device’s original files. Though I know pretty well how GPS devices work, this would be well above my pay grade but, with clear and reliable instructions, I’d give it a go, if it was as way to keep a good device functioning.

One question though. When I had a 660 and BMW’s equivalent model, I used to load Open Street Maps of the whole of France, Belgium and Germany onto an SD card, from memory, using nothing more that Garmin’s Map Installer. Why does it now require tampering with the 660’s internals? Does the simple method from the past no longer work?

2. Leedude has been asked to run an experiment. If he can at some point run it and let us know the result, great.

Thank you.

IF you have been able to download CN to your PC, rather than use GE or BC to install the maps, use Mapinstall directly to do so.

Do I read this correctly as:

CN = City Navigator

GE = Garmin Express

BC = BaseCamp

Richard i sent Mike CN 2024,10 that i knew would work, why Mikes maps would not work i am unsure as i never got to see the unit.
Maybe Leedude03 can come back in time and tell us how his unlock codes work on a different Zumo :nenau- I was under the impression that Garmin did not make this possible as these are generated and linked to the purchase and the Zumos' serial number. - The mystery continues :duno

I believe you have to download one of the offered segments to obtain the unlock codes.

@Richard = yes

I cannot upload Mapinstall here as it is an .exe but you can still find it on the web.

In answer to this

Could you try something on your 600 which may help others?
Download say two OSM maps
Rename them gmapsupp1 , gmapsupp2
Place them in the 600s' internal memory - can the unit read the maps?
THEN
=> Repeat with the maps moved to the SD card- can the unit still read the maps?

Then repeat above but change map names to say Romania.img France.img
Can the Zumo 600 read those in both the internal memory and/or the SD card?

Not enough room on the internal memory in any of my units without moving or deleting maps off the units, and i am not doing that it takes up far to much of my time of which i do not have at the moment, with reference to putting the OSM maps on the sd card this only works with 1 OSM and not 2 maps and it has to be named gmapsupp, the 1 unit (660) i tried it on would not read either gmapsupp1 or gmapsupp2 and i am not saying this would be the case for anyone else's unit just the one i tried.

enough already i have work to do.

Redboots you may be correct but i was not asked to do that, gmapsupp and gmapsup1 i believe would be workable. it has been a while since i had 2 maps on any of my units, i would need to confirm it for myself,

Thank you Leedude.
I read that you are busy- aren't we all!
My input was solely to help your friend Mike- as well as potentially others with old units and find out actual facts as against 'definite maybes' for a unit I do not have.

I can only guess at the meaning of your 'enough already'. Clearly, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"...

@ Richard, apologies but I'm out.

I think everyone set about trying to help everyone else as much as they can or could at the time.

I’ll close the thread, not least as the OP now has a functioning 660 again and we don’t want to see WW3 break out accidentally over what was a success story.

If anyone has anything to add, test or try, by all means start a fresh thread, referencing this thread if appropriate.

Thanks.

Richard
