Why won't it see the mapping file?

I've posted this on another thread and am putting it on here to get to a wider audience

I have a Nav 5 and a Zumo 660 which I have had for several years. I use the Nav5 on the 1250GSA and the Zumo is used in my car and on my Bandit and Interceptor which are fitted with the Zumo mount. The Zumo has developed a problem in that it very often freezes and the touch screen refuses to work. This is getting worse, hence the request for another which is on the way.

I last updated the mapping for the 2021 version and it is loaded onto the SD card. Yesterday, I thought I'd have a go at updating it via MapInstall on Basecamp to the 2024 mapping. I selected the mapping I needed and set the download onto the SD Card which all went ok. However, when I started the Zumo it did not pick up the mapping. I backed off the change and reverted to the 2021 file and the Zumo picked it up as normal.

I am confused as to why the Zumo is not recognising the 2024 mapping file on the SD Card yet picks up the 2021 mapping file without issue - can anybody shed any light on this?

Does the instructions mention anything about how the SD card should be formatted or a folder structure on the card?

Most 'downloads' are zip files which will need to be unzipped before the device can read the contents

Also is there a firmware upgrade that your device needs which would have changed how it reads the 2024 file type??

In order

No
The mapping file is not zipped
The device is up to date with all software/firmware

In short I have used the same sequence that I followed on Basecamp when upgrading to the 2021 version.

Have you tried a newly formatted SD card for the 2024 maps?

No mate, but the 2024 file shows on the SD Card just as the 2021 file so logically it should work. I'll see if I have a spare SD Card and try that.

Sometimes Garmin devices are a bit funny with other data on the card. (y)

0k first off are you trying to install the whole of 2024 europe and uk if so this will not fit on the 660 so just download the whole of it to pc or mac only, whatever one you are using, then once that is done choose the map tiles you wish to install using basecamp, it will give you a status bar that lets you know if you choose to many the bar turns red.
then pick the destination you want to send it to Zumo sd.
if it were me Mike i would use a blank sd card of correct size and type and keep your other as spare, report back

Hi Lee, I've done all that mate, have downloaded the 2024 mapping to the laptop, used MapInstall to select the mapping regions, didn't go into the red, and then installed it to the SD Card. Exactly the same process as when I loaded the 2021 mapping but for some reason the Zumo does not see the 2024 mapping file. Luckily prior to doing all this I took a backup of the SD Card so I was able to back the change off to the 2021 version.

Maybe I need to try a brand new SD Card.

have you tried using Garmin Express to install the maps?

Mike if you are putting two maps onto 1 sd card i suggest you change the name of the original map by placing old at the end of the file name, you can always change it back, so it should look somthing like and i am going from memmory now so might be slightly different.

gmapsupp. img

gmapsuppold.img and leave the other as (new one) as gmapsupp.img try that please,

I always give mine a more meaningful name so I know what's what :) .
Currently using CNEU242N and CNEU242S (.img) in my old Montana.
The old maps were called CNEU241N & S

i feel pretty sure not 100% though that if you use anything but gmapsup.img gmapsup1.img and gmapoem.img and also gmapprom.img on the 660 it will not work .

Try this naming format Mike if my above fix does not work
1st map gmapsupp.img in folder \Garmin -- 2nd map gmapsup1.img in folder \Garmin: as i said you can always change the naming back

I think you're right.
The unit creates .sum files for each recognised file so you can check what its found.
I found this:
Device model/Firmware:
Nuvi 660FM 4.90 firmware

working image names with paths:
Device:
\Garmin\gmapbmap.img (basemap)
\Garmin\gmapprom.img
\Garmin\gmapprom1.img
\Garmin\gmapsupp.img
\Garmin\gmapoem.img
SD-Card:
\Garmin\gmapsupp.img

there is a thread somewhere on the forum if memmory serves me right where i went through this with another member with same issue

have you tried using Garmin Express to install the maps?
Wessie, Garmin Express tries to install it onto the internal memory which is not large enough and it does not give you the option of directing the download to the SD card

Hi Lee, I'm not mate, after backing up the current mapping file and sum file I deleted them so the SD card was clear for downloading the 2024 mapping.

must be "a feature" of the ancient 660. My slightly younger Zumo 390 has to have an SD card since 2022 as "all Europe" is to large for the internal memory. Garmin Express automatically sees the SD card and gets on with the install.

Mike i take it you can see the card when the zumo is connected to the pc. and you can see the folder on the card, the folder should be called Garmin, and when you install the map it goes into the folder and is called gmapsup.img or very similar, and when you then go to map info the map is not there, no box to tick, is this correct, and when you turn the unit on as its booting up you get a green line crossing the screen slowly. do you get all this. confirm please
