First thing I'll mention is that the connection to my PC is fine, but that I have that hard-wired, meaning it doesn't use the Wi-Fi.

I'm with TalkTalk, the router has the following lights lit: Power, ADSL, Internet, and LAN1, they are all green, the Internet and LAN1 ones blink randomly every few seconds. WLAN, WPS and LAN2 are unlit.

Neither of the two little icons that normally appear right at the top left hand side of the iPad screen are present- I mean the little rotating spoked wheel and the fan with three little arcs (showing the signal strength??)

When I go to Settings > Wi-Fi, it says next to it "Not Connected", I click on that and the Wi-Fi panel opens with switch that selects ON/OFF, that is set to ON. Below that is "Choose a Network..." with the little wheel that goes around appearing every 8 seconds, stays visible for 4 seconds, and then off again for another 8. In the panel below it says "Other >", when I press on that it opens a panel labelled Other Network, I need to enter the name of the chosen network (TalkTalk-****** in my case) and in another panel below that it says "Security", "None" has been selected and this can be clicked on to select either WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise.

When I enter my network name (as given on the back of the router) and the press "Join" it tells me that "Could not find network TalkTalk-******

It seems that I'm fucked.

Please can you help.

PS I also tried resetting the iPad by holding the Off button on the edge for a few seconds followed selecting the Power Off on-screen switch, and then switching on again, that didn't help either.

Have you tried rebooting the router....? :nenau
Ah, there's a place where it says RESET on the back- I looked for that before and didn't see it feckity feck. Should I prod that with a paperclip or something like it?

Not unless you want to erase all the settings. Just switch it off at the plug or pull the power cord out of it and then reverse the procedure.

Switch it off > leave it for, say, 15 secs. > switch it on again.... :D
Yes, but not for 15, five to ten seconds usually works. Hang on,

One, two, three, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, TWENTY.

There, that should do it. Give it a minute or so.

Bom bom bom, tiddle ee dee.

Turned out nice again, I see.

Still nippy for the time of year though.

No. Still dead.

Open a normal browser window on your PC

In the address bar where a site URL normally appears, type in 192.168.1.1

Hit return.

this should log you in to the router......it should ask you for a PW and username...use admin for both.

If you can get that far, you should see a good number of pages which may well help....without seeing exactly what's on the screen and your options, it's hard to say exactly where to go from there, but you may well find an option that has barred the iThingy, or one to allow it.....you will also find info like what is connected to the router, probably a log of what has TRIED to connect to it and options to change the PW and the type of encryption you're using....be careful to write down anything you change, but it's a good idea to change the 'admin' PW and login, as these make your router vulnerable.

EDIT......there is a possibility that it's as simple as an option that needs ticking to enable the Wireless function of the router, but that's being optimistic :)

What is the model of the router, and we can look it up :)

PS this patronising cow might help too....

There's a whole load of shi.... I mean information on the base of the router, here goes:

DSL-3680 Broadband Wireless N150ADSL2+ Router Default Router Settings: IP: 192.168.1.1 Username: admin Password: admin P/N ESL3680BTTF..A1E Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: v1 .03t
Probably more info than you need, there it is anyway.

The IP: 192.168.1.1 Username: admin Password: admin bit rings a bell... :thumb2

I'm guessing that your Ipad is running on IOS7?
I had similar issue with both my Iphone 4S and Ipad after an update.
Try going to "settings" - "general" - "reset" - "reset network settings" then reboot. You will have to re-enter your wifi password to reconnect to your router.
Hope this is the fix for you as it did work for me after I had problems connecting to my sky router, but as you say you can connect your laptop I think the problem lies with a bug in the apple IOS7 software.

Yes, mine is on iOS 7.1.1. Oooh, a bit worried about the bit about having to re-enter the wifi password though, sounds a bit terminal if I get it wrong. Is this the one marked on the back of the router? Ah! Yes, 'course it is, it says "wireless password"- can't argue with that. :)

Right, here goes then.....

Oh dear, still the same, it still doesn't recognise the TALKTALK-****** network name, so I never got as far as entering the wifi password.

EDIT
Where should I enter the password anyway, somewhere completely different?

There's a little box to tick labelled "Wireless Enabled", that is UNticked, but I can't click on it- well, that is to say I can click on it but it doesn't actually switch the tick on.

Sigh.

"Other" is generally used for manually entering details of a "hidden" network that is not broadcasting its SSID.

Unless you live out in the sticks miles from neighbours, if you are not seeing any networks at all on the iPad I doubt the problem lies with the router.

Is airplane mode on?

You do realise that if it's as simple as that, both you AND John are going to get a slap :D

EDIT....FWIW, having re-read this, I'm inclined to agree that the problem is likely to be at the iThingy end rather than the router's........you would be hard pressed to accidentally log in and change anything in the router, but updates and iQuirks could easily change the WIFI settings in the tablet.

You will get numerous attempts at it......at worst, most routers will lock you out for a few minutes to an hour, and as your PC is hardwired, it will make no difference to your current situation.

Most ARE case sensitive though, beware :)

Another couple of things that might help......

Sometimes, the channel that a wifi router uses may be interfered with by someone else's router signal or some spurious electronic noise, so it IS possible to change the channel:

TalkTalk will automatically set the best wireless channel for your environment. But in some circumstances, it may help the wireless signal to change the channel manually by following these steps.

Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, type http://192.168.1.1 into the Address bar and press Enter on the keyboard.
Enter the username and password and click OK.
Note: The default username and password are both admin (this is case-sensitive).
Select Wireless from the menu on the left.
Change the channel in the Wireless Channel drop-down list. We recommend using Auto which will automatically find the best channel for your router. You can also choose an individual channel.
Note: You can select any channel between 1 and 11.
Click Save at the bottom of the screen.

LINKY....you're not the only one having issues with iThingies and this model router
(worth a read)

John, do you have any other routers kicking about?
You do not have to use the Talk talk one, you can use most other routers and configure them with the info you now have access to via logging in to yours using the admin login to it :)
(I use a Belkin router rather than the SKY one they provided, and get better results)
