I have a problem with the brake light on my 2003 R1150 GSA twin spark with servo ABS and would appreciate any pointers. I moved this over from the servo threads as I'm not sure the problem is servo related and suggestions from other members (Thanks to Tadhg and Dr Farkoff) that I may get more response from a new thread; so here goes.

For a while riders behind mentioned that my brake light was flickering which I thought may be down to the front brake lever wobbling due to road vibrations and triggering the light. Went for a ride last week and had the usual comments about the light when we got to the bike meet. Parked up for a few hours and when I restarted, the general warning light (Triangle light below ABS) came on. No ABS light and all brakes working fine so rode home gently with no problems. The manual says the general warning light is for a rear light fault or ABS fault. so I checked all the brake fluid levels (front, rear and servo reservoirs) and they are all OK and the fluid is clean.

At ignition on, it goes through the "self check" , the servo clicks and whines as usual and everything is fine until I touch either brake lever, then the general warning light comes on and only resets if I switch off and back on, then it repeats the same cycle. The tail light is fine and working and the brake light filament is also fine but I have no brake light from either front or rear switch actuation. I was originally thinking I have a problem with the switches in the servo, but assume the ABS light would come on if this was the case?? Dr Farkoff helpfully gave me some tips on checking the brake switches at the levers which I'll follow up but as stated above, I have no brake light from either front or rear lever and the probability of both switches failing at the same time seems pretty unlikely. This leaves me pondering Dr F's suggestion that I may be looking for a broken wire. Unfortunately life is getting in the way and I won't be able to check things until Thursday.
Any pointers for the most likely places to look for a broken brake light feed? All the excess cable ties around the head stock were removed before I bought the bike last year and the wiring is in good general condition, without extra bits spliced in everywhere. There is no alarm.
Mechanically, I'm happy to tackle most things, but I struggle to get my head around electrical systems and the Haynes manual is as typically unhelpful as I've come to expect.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Mac

First thing I would take the rear light apart and make sure all the contacts are making contact with the bulb - when mine did this it was fixed by bending the earth contact to the bulb. Also try changing the bulb if you haven't already.

Thanks for the tip. I was planning to start at the light and work forward. Already changed the bulb; both the new one and the old are fully functional when not in the bike!

Copied from my post on the servo thread...

Quick trip into the garage tonight and pulled the new bulb. Bulb OK but looked into the socket and saw there was some black contamination on the contacts - looked like the arcing deposits you used to get on the contact breakers back in the days when I still had hair. Scraped it all clean with a flat scalpel, put the bulb back in and everthing now works as it should. Then took the precaution of removing the bulb and applying ACF 50 to the contacts and the bulb!

My thanks to you, Dr.F and Tadgh who all responded in my hour of need;interestingly, Tadgh has also had the bulb contact thing so that makes at least 3 of us who've had the same problem.....

God knows how much time, money and anger I could have used up chasing the problem without the collective wisdom of this forum. Gentlemen, I am in your debt; payment will surely take liquid form if we meet!

Cheers,

Mac
