I've run varios panniers for probably 10 years on water cooled and pre water cooled GS's.
I've always fancied a set of Adventure racks and boxes which I've now fitted to my new 1250 Exclusive.
I wondered if somebody with varios fitted could do me a favour and measure fully expanded the widest measurement.
I cant do it myself now as the adventure racks wont let me fit the varios back on.

Reason is when filtering I'm wondering how much wider the adventure boxes are they appear wider than the bars.

:beerjug::beerjug:and hopo you all had a great Christmas

Redrocket expanded the Varios are 92 cm wide and made small they measure 82 mm !
Expanded a little wider than the bars...

Thanks for that I'll put on the panniers tomorrow and compare. I filter quite confidently with the varios expanded but these I thought looked wider but not much more than the bars .
Thanks a lot for checking :beerjug:

Redrocket if I remember right I think the Aluminum ones are about 10 cm wider than the Varios set on big...maybe you can measure yours when you got them on your bike !
I might go back to the aluminum ones after I dropped my Varios the first time...;)
I actually like Both systems but the aluminum ones carry 12 liters more combined and are more sturdy.
I just wish BMW would re-route the exhaust like on the R1100S to have 2 FULL SIZE BAGS !

Hi thanks popped them on today and measure exactly a metre or 1000 mm lol. So 80mm wider not so bad then :thumb2

My main gripe with the varios is the biggest one is on the side stand side since water cooled so bike leaned over if packed for camping and not using bags things start to fall out .Ok if not crammed full maybe.
Yes silencer is a pain why they couldnt have a swivel coupling so you can lower it with panniers fitters I dont know.
Now of course with the ali Adventure boxes it can also be a problem if you have tents chairs etc on passenger seat making lifting the lids off a pain .
No doubt it'll all work out ok can't wait for my first camping trip :D:D
Thanks for your help as always

Ahhh the vario game of trying to shove things in faster than them popping back out.

Nothing falls out of the Varios if you get the inner bags from TT...
I think the Varios are the better and more practical bags except for long trips far away where a spill far away from home will bend and not break your boxes.
Otherwise I hope if anyone from BMW is listening on the next GS-generation due out soon please re-route the exhaust under the seat for 2 FULL SIZE BAGS !!! AS the exhaust sized bag is much small inside (-10 liters:()

I did say with out the bags fitted. I for one cannot fill every nook and granny if put in a bag first ....and yes I have two sets one set for varios and one for the adventure panniers. I will use them only if using hotels

I also thought they weighed a shed load ‘empty’ when I was lugging ‘em on the bike.

That is one of the reasons I have now changed to an RS, but for my last GS I bought a spare exhaust and modified it to fit lower, allowing me to fit a full sized pannier on each side, though I used Shad panniers with modified mounting brackets rather than the BMW ones. On the previous GS I had used an RT exhaust which fits straight on, and just needs an extension to the hanger bracket.

And you've got your bags nicely filled and squeezed into the Varios ... then you board a ferry and nowadays they pack you in so close it's a struggle to get the lids open enough to get your bags out! No issue with top loaders, having had both it's ally boxes every time for me.

Hi, Does anyone know if there are any aluminum cases that can connect to a R1250GS just like the Vairo boxes (without a rack/frame)?

Not that Im aware of .Mountings will only accept various where as adventure racks will take the standard adventure Ali panniers and the bumot Ali ones
