Is the width of the bike wider with the panniers on? In other words if the mirrors fit through a gap will the panniers do so too?:)

That's a cracking answer, thanks. I only asked this question since I've been riding it with just a top box. Today, however, I rode about 130 miles down to Kent and traffic on A12 & A130 was queuing for miles so I got some serious filtering practice.
As I was filtering I felt the bike was quite comfortable and the width didn't really feel a problem. I may now just fit the panniers and ride with the top box only when I need it.
As an aside I would not have felt my previous VStrom 650 with panniers on would have got through some of the gaps the RT dealt with!! Amazing bike.

Cheers.

I measured my R1200RT and I reckon the panniers are the same width of the mirrors, however I feel more confident in the traffic without them....

Agree that mirrors are probably the widest part but adopting the old adage "if the mirrors will get through the rest will" looks a bit suspect to me because the panniers are at best only marginally less wide. I have to get my RT onto the road via a gap between 2 cars of a few CMS over 100. In a straight line and at much less than walking speed it's easy enough. But I would be less comfortable filtering until I have had a bit of practice. Have done some where drivers kindly widen the gap but have backed off but yet to go for slim gaps.
