Untill a few days ago the 1200 would start in gear with stands up and clutch in.If bike is running with clutch in, and in 1st gear and you put the side stand down, engine stops. So side stand switch works ok.Most of the time i park bike on side stand in first to stop any movement for and aft, right pain unable to start in 1st with clutch in.
If any one has any ideas, great. If not, then bike is due service at C.W. in Dorchester in Sept.
Did not find same problem on a search,so thought i would ask.Tks

To to allow the bike to start in gear with stands up and clutch in I would presume that there is a clutch switch. The symptoms you have described certainly point towards a faulty clutch switch...

I had a similar problem, the lever on the clutch microswitch had bent slightly, so it wasn't quite activating the switch when the clutch was pulled in. I bent the lever out slightly (only a couple of mm) and that fixed it.

This may be a safety feature that is built into the software.

If you try to start a "parked" bike (ignition was off), it requires that you put the gearbox in "0" gear before it will start.

If you have had an unwanted engine stop without switching of the ignition, it's enough to have the clutch in to start.

hi buckhouse . is your gear indicator working ok, you may think this is a strange question but im on my third gear indicator switch in 10 months of 1200gs riding , and each time switch as gone bike would not start with side stand down , and with bike in nutral , putting side stand down caused engine to stall . mechanics could not explaine it but i can only think something in gear indicator was telling the bike its still in gear .
