Wind Noise 2008 R1200 GS........

I took delivery of my r1200gs a month ago and finally managed to get out today. Sunny and dry roads. What a fantastic bit of kit, a big change from my VFR 800 of the past 8 years. It was great to get into the 'swing' of things. Forgot how I used to enjoy the BM, having last rode my R90s in 2002. They only thing that disappointed me was - Wind noise - around the base of my helmet. I have fitted winglets and the screen was set at the highest setting. Seat on the low setting.
Does anyone else suffer from this wind noise, not buffeting or is it me with my Shoei helmet.

What do I need to do, get the Schuberth helmet (Green Leopard ear plugs already purchased) out or look at adapting the screen. All suggestings welcomed as I have a Normandy trip coming up in April and do not fancy having to deal with the wind noise. Mostly on all on the motorway.

The 1200 is still a great bike all said and done, just need to get used to it.....

As you have GS, not GSA, do want i did:

i am 6ft4, stock screen on my GS was bit poor, so i fitted Nippy Normans High & Wide:

You can see in the photo how much extra it adds, it made a considerable difference. Much less wind noise around 'standard' cruising speed of 80, once you get to 90+ it starts to get quite noisey again.

Good ear plugs help, but i often wear Bose In-Ear headphones, which act as ear plugs and tunes, they all but eliminate wind noise sub 70mph, but again 90+ its all wind noise again.

Something which i did not expect to help is tank bag, got the standard BMW GS tank bag, its really reduced buffeting to my body and could swear blind its reduce wind noise

Will try the ar plugs and I need a tank bag. Thought of a BAGSTER, but the shape of the 2008 tank does not blend well.......I will keep looking as I need a bag with a good clear top, so I can check my camcorder.....

One of the best 'tops' comes with the TT bag, IMHO.

Velcroed at the end, so it makes it easy to slide wires etc. in and out. Decent size, too. The original BuMW bag's map case was a joke.

Ear plugs are good, too.

I am 6'5" tall, and have decided to go for the cockpit screen from Nippy Norman. I will be sitting in undisturbed air, but virtually no protection from the elements. Wind noise and / or buffeting seems to be a common problem with riding a GS

If you are interested in trying a super high wide screen, I've just put mine up for sale in the "items for sale" section.

I just had the winglets fitted to my 09 GS and they make a big difference on fast roads. Reduced the buffetting considerably, just £13 each. Someone said there is a better 'larger' screen out there with a tip that is adjustable, anyone have any leads as to who sells it? cheers, Paul

I have the MRA Vario screen which is taller, although only just, than the standard screen. This has a variable top spoiler on top which works a treat for me.

I tried one of those but still got unacceptable noise, so I now have a Givi which I find a bit better.

From reading various threads over several years I've come to the conclusion that experience of screens is highly subjective and one that's perfect for one tosser can be absolutely dreadful for another.

If I was BMW dealer I'd get a few screens from the major players, Givi, MRA, CalSci etc and rent them out for customers to try, and supply the screen the customer gets on with. Like anything you break it, you pay and keep it. The customer would have to fit the screen themselves, of course in keeping with BMW's style, a fitment service would be offered at cost. As even a salesman could fit one.

I'll take a one-off payment from each dealer who offers this service.

h0wz3r - which one did you fit, the taller one of the standard; see pics attached. I know what you all mean though when it comes to screen types; it depends so much on your own ride height, seat postion etc. I'm going to see how the winglets work out for me. I'm riding to Lake Geneva Easter weekend, so that run will test the benefits. I may then decide I need less trubulence and noise. Thanks all for your tips. Paul
