Windows 8 any good or avoid ?

If you need a new laptop why not go to Apple?

I bought one in 09 and had it ever since. Personally speaking i wouldn't give windows houseroom......

Looks like there will be a major update in the next few weeks to Win 8.
My guess is a Touch Screen version and a mouse/keyboard version, or at least a quick change between them.

they have to do somthing its a pile of "shite" at the moment, it does not work well unless on a touch screen, and even then its a pain in the arse, and its looks crap, I dont want an operating system that looks like Duplo, for 4 year olds. Had one supplied at work and sent it back as not fit for purpose.

I'm really quite happy with windows 7 But I need a new lappy and there really is not much choice unless I buy one with win 8 so is it that bad or what please

Have a look at the Pc World Business web site, anyone can buy from there and most of the kit is still Win7 Pro. I bought a Samsung Ultrabook last week and it's good!

F*ck windows 8

its not the interface thats the problem, its the bloody operating system.

I paid nearly a grand and have got something i could happily frisbee out of the window hourly.

Wish i had stuck with 7.

Never again.

Blimey, windows 7 is crap enough, I can only imagine what windows 8 must be like.

I've got 8 running on a Dell XPS 12, A homemade rig, Alienware M15X, kids Lenovo and HP laptops and not a single issue.

It's different, but it's stable, it's fast and all my Windows 7 apps run fine.

What's that saying again .... workman .... tools :)

I think OSX is shite, clunky, unintuitive and flaky (Ex MBP / Ex iMac / ex MacPro Owner) and I would not give Apple products the time of day ;) It's PC hardware under the surface in a MAC and when you control both the hardware and the OS, it's easy for a vendor to make things stable.

I have to confess some bias though :)

i could understand in intuitive, all operating systems are unintuitive if your intuition is used to another system. But flakey? How so? Clunky? Hard for me to imagine how you could find a mac clunky after windows:nenau

That's the whole point, a grown up system rather than a hobbyists dabblefest.

Moving from corporately locked-down XP Pro to corporately even more locked-down Win7 next month... I can't wait :augie

Still, there's always the chance that the roll-out team will condemn the Lenovo X200 laptop I'm currently blessed with using and replace it with a new light-weight Dell item.

It's not for nothing that Microsoft adopted the hour-glass icon to indicate that you're in for a long wait... from boot to actually being able to start working can take almost half an hour. Somewhat frustrating when you've umpteen tasks to progress.

I found Win8 to be a bit quicker than Win7. I installed it on two PCs, an Acer Netbook and an old (9 year old?) Fujitsu Amilo Laptop and it performs really well on both. However, I do get less battery usage on the Netbook now compared to when it was running Windows 7 Starter edition, which is to be expected.

The Laptop was running XP and had become really slow taking forever to boot up, and when it was finally running it would frequently busy itself during use with me having to wait 10 minutes or more before I could do anything with it. According to the test software provided by Microsoft the laptop wasn't compatible with with Win8, but it had become so unusable I decided to give it a go. Win8 wouldn't install correctly over XP so, after installing an SSD, I installed Win7, got it working under that, then installed Win8. I had to do a bit of a search to find drivers that would work with some devices, but in the end it all works fine and I now have a usable Laptop that boots in under 30 seconds, is lightening fast, and a joy to use (after installing Start8  ).

The Netbook also had a compatibility issue, the screen resolution was too low to use the Metro Apps, but a quick search on the Internet found a registry hack that sorted that out.

I was about to start a thread asking if anyone had any experience with touch screen laptops running windows 8, I dont reckon I'll bother now after reading this thread.

Stick to windows 7. So i'm told windows 8 was designed for touch screen. I have windows 8 on my PC and its Sh**e, I should have suck with 7.

Avoid at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see some manufacturers are charging more if you want Window$ 7 installed, spend the money and get 7

If you don't want to, then get a Linux distro for free, practically bug free, loaded with all the softwar you need, it's faster and also free! (Linux Mint is recommended).
