Winter garage

I have put my GS in the garage for winter, as i dont get the chance to ride it much through the winter months.

Should I do anything to the bike? like put the battery on charge? dissconect the battery? any suggestions?

You need to connect it to an optimiser to the battery to keep the charge constant, but its not a good idea to leave the bike in the garage for too long with out giving it a run. Im using a oxford oximiser at the moment that seems to be ok.

I would:

Disconnect the battery and leave it in a nice warm place.
Give it a good wash, make sure it`s dry then liberally coat in WD40.
Place on centre stand with wood under the wheels to keep the tyres off the cold floor.
Cover to stop birds, bats, kids or cats sh*tting on it or scratching it!!
Have sleepless nights thinking about the day you can get it back out on the road in the spring.

Oh, it`s probably not a good idea to start it occasionally without giving it a good blast. I would disconnect everything and leave it to hibernate!!

I assume you're only leaving it three months or so? If so, give it a good clean, wd40/F365/ACF it, put it on a charger and don't worry.

If you ride in the winter when its frosty, all the road salt will make your various bits go rusty.

Don't use WD40 to coat the bike - it stains chrome yellow.

Remove the battery to inside so it stays warm leave it until you are ready to ride again then give it a good charge the day before. Spin the rear wheel by hand a few times, whenever you get the chance, to help prevent the final drive oil seals from giving up. Put posh unleaded in it the last time before putting it away because it keeps better than the cheap stuff.

wondered how long before id get abused for putting my wee beauty in the garage. mainly coming off on some ice, not cos im scared of hurting myself, but of hurting my bike!
im home for just over a week during xmas and new year and will be out on it much as i can, other than that i think i'll take all ur advice on board!

Scared of hurting the bike. FFS !!! A few scratches wont hurt - its just metal and plastic - all fixable if the newly modified aesthetics dont please... Isnt that what crash bars are for? Pah !

Perhaps you could try riding it every day to ensure that it will work when you need it next... Or are you made of sugar and likely to dissolve ?

well im living in london at the moment, and the bike is in my garage, in Fife (scotland) so tough to get on it every day, unfortunatlly!

well im living in london at the moment, and the bike is in my garage, in Fife (scotland) so tough to get on it every day, unfortunatlly!

Well I live in London too; the bike lives on the street and gets used everyday. Lets face it, there's very little ice around in London even in winter - its a big city, and warmer than the country - ambient heat and all that. The Tube sucks, plus you get free parking, and no congestion charge. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?

Get that bike back down from Fife !!!!

Understand not wanting to die under a truck, skilled riding comes into being here, as for not having fun on crap roads, well, I think the shittier the roads the more alert/alive I feel in having to deal with the challenges they throw up, I ride my GS 7 days a week, never and I repeat never have I thought about not riding it due to weather or crap roads, just make sure you wash the salt off.
