and this as well...
Work have supplied me with a laptop to use while I'm away and it apparently has wireless and bluetooth technology inside it, but they've only given me a cable to plug it into a phone line. I've got a broadband modem upstairs connected to my own computer but I'd like to be able to use the laptop anywhere in the house.
Can you tell me what I need to get so I can connect to the internet without using my upstairs modem?
And can you please paste some links so I can get a better idea of what I need?
TIA.

Cable or ADSL broadband??

You need a wifi router basically, but they're different for cable and adsl.

Should be around £50-£60.

Cable signal goes from existing cable/adsl modem into wifi router.
1st PC is hardwired with Network cable into wifi router..you use this to set it up initially.....then wifi router sends signal to laptop.

All you need to buy is the wifi router and another network cable.

. . . and don't buy Belkin! Stick to Netgear or 3Com

Thanks fellas.
I'm on ADSL broadband. My home computer is a Mac whereas the laptop is a PC. Will this cause problems or will I be able to connect both? The Mac only has USB ports.

The same adsl wifi router will do both Mac and PC....I've always been a PC man though so I have no idea if there are any probs setting them up to talk to each other (file sharing etc).....certainly setting it up so both machines have internet access shouldn't be a problem.

You need a mac man to help with the USB/Router thing....I keep away from the damn things....no red framed glasses in this household ;)

BT Broadband

If you are BT Broadband, you can upgrade for free, faster speed and cheaper, £22.99 per month, 250 free Wifi minutes outside and a FREE Modem /router as well.

Worth a go if the company is paying the Broadband bill

Gary

PS I'm using a Linksys wireless router and Modem £49.95 with free card from PC World, generally hate the place but sometimes has a great bargin.
