wireless problem

I've got a cable connection in

goes to a wireless d-link 614 router

then cat5 cable to the main PC and a wireless link to a laptop.

The laptop is now linked to the HIFi so i can access all my music through the hifi.

So - no worries there.

However, everytime i turn the cable modem off overnight then on in the morning nothing works. No internet and no wireless.
I have to power cycle the router and the modem to reestablish the IP address before it all works

Is there any way around this ?

i thought about just leaving the modem on - but then theres always data leakage etc.

dunno 'bout that one ?

Is there any 'foolproof' way of locking the ip address.

I haven't really got a clue about home network and IP and 'stuff' - only what ive read on
homenethelp - but thats just stage by stage stuff - not what if ??

Just make sure you have a firewall installed and running. e.g. ZoneAlarm.

You could presumably leave the modem powered up but turn off the PC?

I leave my modem/router)wireless) on all the time, but switch off my computers when finished with.


my laptop down stairs in the office is connected via cable, thats my works connection or my private laptop, and my son's desk top is via the wireless loop.

I have Norton Security, with NAV and firewall running all the time, but my son decieded (15 to visit a few SITES and ended up with the secuity being switched off , 27 virus and 2 dialers present,

2 weeks later managed to clear all the virus etc and have made sure, (under pain of death, ie removal of his phone and guitar) that he's not to visit SITES like this again, oh to be young again.

Anyway, to answer your question, no problems now connecting every morning.

As per the first post - leave the modem and router turned on... Isn't this why we pay for broadband? Permanently available connections...

Best site for this information is www.adslguide.org.uk - go see their 'chat' pages and take a look at DSL Hardware.

Once you've had a look there, then you can work through your domestic network to check to see the order in which IP addresses are established - i.e. which bit is behaving as the DHCP server...

My modem-router gets left on all the time (except holidays) thus avoiding the problem.

I have NTL cable and a Linksys wireless router. Unless leaving the house unoccupied for a reasonalbe period we leave them switched on.

Every now and then we have to reboot the modem as the connection drops out.

We have to turn off the router & modem; then reboot the modem and wait for the RDY LED to start flashing; then we can turn on the router.

The PCs, whether connected via WiFi or ethernet can remain on during the reboot process.
