I have a 96 R1100GS. I have noticed that the plastic outer protective sheath over a lot of the wiring has degraded and has split and in places has fallen off.

Has anyone had a similar problem and what product have you used to cover the wiring up again with? Any favourites?

wiring

The link from Paul covers all your likely to need :thumb2 if your not familiar with the self amalgamating stuff its a bit like very thin rubber that when you stretch & wrap it on it bonds with itself hence the name and done correctly should be waterproof. Its expensive but you only use small amounts at a time. You can then overwrap with the upvc or cloth tape which is neat. If you've got long sections of shagged wiring might be worth taking it back to where its good and soldering new lengths in? AL

Are all self amalgamating tapes the same? I ask cos I found the stuff that I have started to split and break up when it came into contact with WD40.

TLC sell the self amalgamating tape at less than £2.20 +VAt, much cheaper than it used to be. Handy stuff. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Cable_Accessories_Index/Tape_A/index.html

don't use the self amalgamating tape, it's horrible.

use the stuff paul suggested

You will need an adhesive or self amalgamating tape to seal the ends of the PVC tape as its non adhesive.

I think you have it, thanks. Its finding the right product. I used to use a tape which amalgamated with a goo which came out of the tape as you used it. Not so good.
The wiring under the sheath is good, I hope to get protection back on the loom before further damage occurs. a secondary winding of cloth tape will be good in exposed areas.
