Hi peeps, can anyone help with the wiring of a zumo 550 to a 1200gs. I would like it to only be live with ignition on, as opposed to being linked to the battery thus live all the time. Do I need a seperate relay or is there one I can piggyback onto, thanks in advance........:thumb

I think that an 05 1200GS will have a canbus socket near the headstock that's suitable for powering a satnav. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can get a connector from a BMW dealer and make a lead. The canbus socket is only powered when the ignition's on.

I don't use the canbus socket. I have a lead from the battery I use for a charge, so I bought the same plug and joined that to the zumo power cable. 10 second job to disconnect, tucks away neatly ünder the small side panel. Not quite as neat as using the canbus, but a bit simpler.

You star!!!

Thank you very much, will look for the canbus socket and try the wee soldering tip on the ends of the wires, I thank you kind sir.....:beerjug:

Touratech will sell you a slightly more expensive CANBus lead that has the CANBUS socket on one end and the Garmin cradle socket on the other - saves soldering the Garmin cradle lead supplied with the Zumo onto the BMW lead that you will have to buy anyway.

Don't spend anything, carefully bare the live to the accessory socket under the tool tray, slide over some heat shrink, then solder the Garmin power lead directly onto that. Take the earth to the battery, shrink the insulation and your away...

BMW fitted my Zumo power lead and they took it from the head lights.

Powers up with the ignition and has worked fine for 3 years.

Zumo on 05 GS

I've had my Zumo wired via the headstock on both an 05 GS and 08 GSA. Get the right connector from your BMW dealer and connect it to the socket on the headstock.:thumb
