Wobbles

Have any of you experienced a low speed wobble when loaded with panniers on at filtering speeds up to about 35mph. Very difficult to maintain balance & control especially when coming to a stop and before you all ask I had not been on the p***.
My rear tourance is getting worn and square and I know I need to change it but I was wondering if this would be the cause. Front and rear were inflated to recommened pressure for two up with luggage, although I wasn't fully laden.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

 They all do that Sir!

Seems to be a fairly well known phenomena (dadaadedadah:rolleyes: ) ......a combination of fairly sharply profiled Tourences and them being squared off...the wobble is caused by you coming off the sqaure and dropping onto the steeper than some round bits......

Go faster or get some new hoops :D

Au Contraire, Blackadder...

How old is your front Tourance?

There have been a few cases of the 'cupping' wear effect on the front leading to a low speed 'shimmy'. My Adv suffered from this - the tyre was completely legal - probably had another couple of thousand miles left in it. See the ADVRider thread here for more info. It seems it might be a batch problem with Tourance at the moment - I'm trying out Anakees...

I've always been pleased with Tourances and this problem is new to me - in over 70k miles, this front tyre is the only one which I've experienced this problem with...

I filter a fair amount and I've never had this problem even on quite severely worn tyres. I've found squared off tyres tend to move off line a little bit when you're in the crown of the road but nothing as drastic as you describe.

As your pressures are OK, I'd follow Mike's advice.

Low Speed Shimmy

Yup, mine has done this for the past 10,000 miles - since I last fitted a new front Tourance. Initially thought it was the rim slightly out of true, but then I started reading of similar symptoms on other machines with Tourances. New one being fitted before I go to Ireland later this week - will let you know if the shimmy disappears.

P.S. Shimmy seemed slightly worse when the tyre was new.

Thanks for your input guys I've decided to order a pair of BT020's to replace the tourances.
Is it very easy to remove the rear wheel - in the handbook it mentions about checking the ABS gap. Do you think this would really be need to be done. i'm asking becuase I will probably have the tyres fitted to loose wheels.

Woo Hoo!!! New front Tourance fitted, shimmy now gone. If only I'd realised before the thing was 6000 miles old.:(

Well, i've had the BT020's fitted and they seem to work well. No more wobbles or shimmying and a smoother and more compliant ride I think.
All in all a good choice.

Loaded panniers means that you need to increase the preload setting on the rear shock.

Yep as MikeO says its the front one that is going to give you the problem. My current one is really bad and its not fun filtering between traffic here in Barcelona.

I used to be super satisfied with the Tourances, but I am going to try somnething else when these get change in a couple of months - TKCs or Anakees.

I find it bad at low speeds and when cornering, which is not ideal. Your cases just exaggerate the effect.

Bob - I can recommend the Enduro 4 front as a direct replacement for the Tourance. Works with either Endo 4 or Tourance rear.

OK thanks David I´ll have a look at them.

cheers

Had a similar problem to Mike O on my last front Tourance. Still had a bit left before it would be illegal but had it re-shod and been fine since. Good tyres and with 17,000miles out of my current front one I'll be having the same again when it does need replacing.
