WORD OF WARNING

A couple of days ago I was driving in my car in the middle lane of a motorway. The next thing I knew I had been spun around and my passenger window was full of an IVECO badge and I found myself being pushed sideways by a lorry for several hundred yards at about 60mph across the motorway towards the Armco, thankfully stopping about a foot from it.

When the accident happened I was passing an Austrian 18 wheeler and so left hand drive. The problem with this being the huge blind spot that they have and so the driver did not see me and moved out swinging my car into his path. (Brown underpants time)

My first thought (Well maybe my second after several expletives) was ‘What if I had been on my bike’? When the emergency services arrived they said that it was a common accident with continental lorries and the paramedic said that he would had been scraping me up and not treating a stiff neck if I had been on a bike.

If you’re riding your bike on a motorway or duel carriageway be aware of foreign Lorries and give them plenty of room encase they try this move on you !

That`s the key to it,don`t get too near to foreign lorries,as they just may not see you. Be aware though, that even if you do give space, you may still not be seen,so never assume.
Hope you`re ok mate.

Hi Silence,

very common occurance I'm afraid.

I was driving to London a few months ago and the traffic came to a halt. I said I'll bet it's a LHD truck that's hit a car. 90 minutes later when we got alongside the accident and sure enought a Turkish truck had taken out a Peugeot! She was amazed and now appreciates why I always give them a wide birth and pass them quickl!

Very common nowadays, two things when on your bike.

1. Check the plates and mirrors on the truck to see if you can see the driver, if foreign plates then its LHD also a lot of UK companies that travel in Europe a lot have UK plates but are LHD so keep out of the blind spot, move over to the third lane if you can.

2. Don't hang about in the possible blind spot on bike or in a car, hold back well to the rear until the path through is clear then go quickly past into his view. Don't travel on a parrallel course.

Pal of mine is ex-traffic cop. He told me about seeing a foreign artic completely trash a VW Golf on a roundabout in Salisbury. It crunched the car down, then dragged it for 50 yds up the road before it seperated.
The police car pulled the driver over & the driver told them that he hadn't seen or realised what he'd done. What was really scary was my pal telling me 'You know what, I believe the driver was genuinely unaware when we told him what he'd done'!

Avoid them at all costs!

Thanks everyone.

I'm ok and have a stiff neck, which I thought was not bad after what could have happened.

Look forward to coming to the next meeting wherever it may be.

There was a feature about this exact thing on "5th Gear" last year. Looked scary :yikes
