I’ve posted earlier about the misfire and hesitation I’ve been having with my new water cooled GS. Whenever I try to maintain a steady speed the engine begins faltering and hesitating. It starts slowly and gradually increases until it’s like running on fouled plugs. In addition, when releasing the throttle or coasting on a slight downward incline the engine clearly misfires or falters. At the present time BMW is not able to provide a satisfactory solution to my problem.
After some consideration, I decided to purchase the Booster Plug to try to compensate for the lousy mapping of fuel during a steady throttle. While the Booster Plug is no magic bullet it still resolves about 90% of my issues.
Due to exorbitant taxes based on horsepower in Norway, this bike costs NOK 270,000 (USD 46,000, £29,000). For that kind of money I get a little irritated when the engine misfires. The problem is that I was a car mechanic for 25 years and I know when an engine is misfiring. On a bike though there is the added problem of road surface transmitting through the handlebar, wind noise and wind buffeting. This makes differentiating a misfire difficult and ends up relying on feel to determine what is misfire and what is false hesitation.
While my bike has a definitive misfire, the Booster Plug takes care of most of the problem. I can recommend it for anyone having similar problems with their wc GS. Just take the additional cost as necessary bling.
The occasional halting and stumbling is something I can live with. In the meantime, I’ll have to wait for BMW to get off its ass and get this sorted.
