Worn discs

18000 miles and the rear disc is worn beyond serviceable limit.
Anyone else think this has worn rather quickly. Most of my old jap bikes would have gone 30,000.

mine the same, not helped by lack of use and semi seizing up leading to warping, caliper needs a strip and clean yearly at least IMO

My original rear disk is still on bike at 45,000 miles, front disks got changed at about 43,000. BMW dealer was surprised they had lasted that long.

Who is telling you it is worn?

If it is BMW they are very conservative on the disc wear and they suggested I change mine after 6000 miles. It finally was an MOT advisery 4 years and 20000 miles later.

Agreed even if your a mm or so beyond min unless there warped or planing a big trip leave them be

Im at 30k on original, BMW wanted to change them a while back eyes:
I will do them at next pad change or if I'm leaving the uk

I thought they warped long before this sort of mileage........my first set did (replaced under warranty) and I have a feeling the replacement set are on their way out too after a much shorter mileage (won't be replaced under warranty).

This thread isn't about warping its about disk thickness. But if your disks are warping there's something wrong with your bike - they don't do it of their own free will.

Well....actually.... The discs on my '04 GS warped on their own at 3K miles, in spite of being inanimate object, and therefore devoid of free will. The same design of semi-floating disc and four pot Brembo caliper was also fitted to the original Ducati Multistrada and they also suffered from the same problem.

So if your disks were not warped when originally fitted, what made them warp if it wasn't a problem with the bike?

I may be speaking rubbish....

I think the rear disc is 4.5mm when new and BMW want to replace it at 4.1mm. I think I ran mine down to 3.1mm. The minimum is stamped on the disc but I think you will need a jobsworth MOT tester to fail you on that.

Some people will give you the doom and gloom of you disc exploding and rear wheel locking but I think you have more chance of you FD or driveshaft seizing then the brake disc
