hi all

got my 1200 gsa in september, rode it for a couple of months till the beginning of december then it's been laid up, it's done nearly 1200 miles.

went to look at it on saturday and noticed on one of the frame spars above the left foot peg the paint has been rubbed away by my trousers or boot, now i would expect this to happen after a couple of years maybe but not 2 months, have phoned the dealers and am taking it in at the weekend so they can take some pics and file a warranty claim.

what concerns me is surely when the frames are original painted they undergo a complete treatment , now i presume they will just try and touch it up so the touch up can't be as good as the original and will just keep rubbing off, will have to see what they come up with,

you have said its your boot or trouser that has rubbed the paint, its paint not an indestructable coating,if i was the dealer i know what i would say.
when i got my 2010 gsa i put some insulting tape at the vunerable areas to protect the paint, and on the center stand, another well known weak point.
why do you think you can get bmw accesory frame guards,as well as touratwat and wundersick.having said that its your bike to treat as you like,so enjoy:D

your having a laugh aint ya, 2 months use and already the paint is worn through, so it would be exceptable to have a hole worn in the middle of your seat because your trousers have rubbed on it, because it's only a bit of vinyl.

or a fd seal start to leak as it's only a bit of rubber, just because you can buy a guard to cover something up doesn't mean you have to

Mmmm

:eek:Not having a laff here - thats why I value the forum so much - its evident that the paint has been rubbed away and I am sure you will do `due process` with your dealer.

All I want to offer is some advice saying that if anyone advises frame protectors, moving forward, then I suggest you think about it mate to stop it happening again in the future (by the way, for the record, I don`t make them!).

As an aside, my 2010 GSA engine bars started to rust after 600 miles  and the dealer is replacing them in the morning. Top marks for the service to be fair.

Worrying, I must admit...............

I do hope they haven`t compromised finish quality for saving a few bucks!

HI

don't get me wrong i will be doing something about it, it just amazes me that some people think this sort of thing is acceptable, well it isn't . why hasn't all the paint gone off the door handles on my van or car they've had years more use than this.
i've got a 10 year old fazer 1000 in the garage no such problems with that nore my previous zzr 1400 nor the blackbird before that.

like i said yes you can put guards on it but it doesn't mean that you have to there is that much tat that you can bolt onto these things i'm suprised some of them move at all.

and yes there are some usefull stuff aswell, it just amazes me that a world class vehcle manufacturer can send a product out with a paint finish that only lasts 2 months.

either alot of people on here have got more money than sence or they have very low expectations from a product that costs the best part of 14k

your dead rite:thumb the fecken £14k paint on these yokes is nearly see thru
not good enough,,,,,,, end off,, lets know how you fair out with the stealers:thumb

I can only agree with you, and that's why I won't be buying one. I know that doesn't help you but it is becoming more of an issue when accountants get hold of manufacturing. On a plus side, if you ride the bike often, it won't rust as you will keep polishing the frame with your boot, as I do on my trials bike. :thumb

MORE MONEY THAN SENSE (too often, but of course not everyone is a numpty these days) :D

Be sure to share your concerns (and presumptions) with your dealer in a forthright and manly manner.

have no fear of that, i'm not the kind of person to go in all guns blazing, but i definately get my point across

Must admit i am dissapointed with the build quality, i have a 2010 gsa and had to have the centre stand replaced after a couple of months mainly dry weather riding as the paint was none existant and starting to rust:blast, when you look at the black paint on the frame it looks almost translucent, not like the nice solid deep black of the frame of my old 2002 1150gs, oh well thats progress:rob

Smooth hammerite if you're that bothered and just ride the fecking thing.

rob which camp are you , more money than sense or low ecpectations

if the bike were older it wouldn't bother me, i would just fix it and get on with it, BUT it isn't it's as good as brand new 1200 miles 2 months use so for paint to rub/wear off isn't acceptable .

for the people that think it's ok well they should go and spend the 14k and then have the paint rub/wear off and then see how ok it really is

before i spent my dosh,i did my research, paint on the 1200s can be a prob.I still bought several because its the bike i like best(and ive had most makes types),so when i got my bike i deceided to look after it as best as I could, hence the protection i applied.ive ridden through the winter salt with the addition of acf 50 and have no corrosion issues at all, perhaps im lucky.

Well, let's see now.

I spent less than that on a new 06 GSA and the paint wore off, just as yours has done.

I did nothing about it. It has got no better, nor an awful lot worse, over the next 55,000 odd miles of use.

The bike has not collapsed, nor ground to a rusty halt. It has though stopped three times (fuel pump controller and two final drive problems) but never once due to partly worn paint.

Somehow I guess I felt that there were better (or should that be worse?) things in the world to get worked up about. So I reserve my wrath for imbeciles who cannot go on an aeroplane without some ridiculous bag on wheels, which they tug around like some sort of faux poodle, then struggle to lift above their heads into the overhead lockers.

Thankfully I have never had cause (or a burning desire) to study the centre stand in too much detail. The bike stands up on it with boring reliability and seems to come off it OK, too; though some do seem to struggle, even so.

just been to dealers today with the same problem. aswell as corrosion on f/d casing and winglet cracked around mounting hole. five months old 1500 miles only been out twice since end of november. photos taken and warrenty claim in motion.

Maybe I ought to invoice my dealer for the roll of black electrical tape I have applied to the frame of my GSA to prevent this awful and debilitating fault from reoccurring.

i just don't get it,

i know the wheels arn't going to fall off or the engine destroy itself because of a bit of paint on the frame wearing away

i just don't get how you see it as not a problem and just ignore it after all it's only a bit of paint and someone will sell you a guard you can put over it and why didn't i realise that in the first place all i had to do is buy every bit of bolt on crap and that will cure it.

so surely if you went and bought a car and the paint started to wear off the sill where your leg rubbed on it every time you got in it would be ok, or as rob farmer suggests just put some smoothrite on it, or if you looked hard enough you could probobly find a cover to bolt onto it .

maybe it's me and i'm expecting too much from a brand new product , hopefully i never have anything fail but if i do i'm sure i can find something to bolt onto it to cure it , or it's all part of the experience of owning a bmw

Go and have a look at a Honda VFR 1200 that has done a few miles (yup some of 'em do)..... off side heel guard etc, wears badly. Bods seem to stick protectors on them....Which is a neat irony: Protectors to protect the guards. It's spreading, it seems.

The lacquer has worn off the shiny door handles in my house through use and they have gone dull. Do you think I ought to go and complain to the local B&Q store manager ?? It's probably not on to see such thin lacquer after spending £20 on a door handle.:nenau

I know that modern water based epoxy paint finishes aren't as tough as the older VOC based paints, and they are probably applied to a thinner standard by robot paint lines than hand sprayed machines of yesteryear, but the fault all comes down to wear and tear (I bet you will get told the same by your dealer.)

My previous R1200 frame had worn through in the same place, my current R1200 also has the same boot-mark wear (bought low-mileage approved used) but hey, with a few turns of electrical tape the eyesore dissapears. At its current rate of corrosion, by the time the frame corrodes through, I'll be too old to ride anyway. I guess I am just too lazy/not that bothered to get a decent paint match and airbrush it back in (which would take me about an hour to do to a nice finish.)
