following the replacement of my duff speedo i decided to investigate the cause of the last ones failure.

when i finally got the input shaft out i noticed loads of crude and bits of worn bushing, which finally seized the drive.

from now on i will squirt a little bit of lubricunt down my shaft every 10-20 thousand KM.

any comments ?

.....surprised the site spell-checker didn't pick this one up.....:)

I can't even type Scunthorpe without it intervening! :D

Seriously though, it is fatal to speedometers to have oil ingress. If you are going to lubricate the cable, do it from the bottom only, and then only sparingly.

Edit: The bloody site spell-check thing ain't working!!!

i understand from my british bike days that grease getting into the speedo is not good, but after dismantling the speedo i cannot see that a slight bit of lubricution will do any harm....but i may be wrong....famous last words.

how reliable are BMW speedos....mine is made in the UK which doesn´t say much.....plus the BMW service book has entries for servicing up to 140,000 km and 4 entries for speedo replacement....does that mean they are only good for around 35,000 km....if that is the case i´ve done well getting 90,000 km out of mine.

does riding on average 6 hours a day overheat the input shaft......ooerrrr missus !!......pick that one up double entendre checker
