Emilio Scotto from Argentina writes in his book 'The Longest Ride' about his 10 year 500,000 mile journey around the world (both ways), on his fully laden 1980 Honda Goldwing. The punishment this machine received is mind boggling, but when you consider that the 'Black Princess' as he calls it, covered 280,000 miles before he changed the engine. All it used until that point was petrol and oil and some of that quite dubious stuff. Yes it needed the side stand re welded at one point, but no failure of the shaft drive, oil leaks or electrical failures!

It does beg the question that if he was embarking on that journey today, would he be doing it on a GS1200? and if he did how far would he get?

It's well worth a read for any ADV bike fan. It makes Ewan and Charlie look like a couple of day trippers. :mmmm

.....he'd get as far as his BMW Assist card would take him. As long as he didn't stray too far from a dealership.

He'd look the part doing it avec twat suit and peg standing styleee bolox.

Oooops!

Would a GS be better on slippery ice and in snow? :nenau

So what does that make you look like:nenau

Well if you want to make a pointless personal quip Mr Timolgra, as someone who has yet to ride across various continents with a film crew and back up team and huge budget to make a TV programme...much the same as you!:thumb

You made the pointless quip Mr Dog:type
But since you're probably a 1200 owner I'll answer the question, there is no doubt in my mind that a 1200 could be ridden twice around the world covering half a million miles with no problems whatsoever.....

If he rode carefully and had the beemer extended cover he could push it as far as 80 or 90 miles :thumb

did a terra circa in 07 on 06 adv, 18000 mls,two bulbs 1 puncture non stop in 3 months, no arse ache, ok battery just gone and summit else is bound to follow:thumb

I think he would have done it on a GS...It all depends how many spares you count... The Honda didn't cover 500k miles with nothing needed either... That milage is galactic, anything would need loads of stuff...

The GS would defo need a few shocks perhaps a dozen, 50 tyres, 3-4 engines, 20 fpc, 20x final drive units..., batteries etc....

I know somebody who 's ridden a Peugeot Speedfight From London to Moscow. 100cc two stroker... made it in 22 days....

You've obviously had a real bad experience with the 1200 as everything you post seems totally negative

Whats the story????

Poppycock.

You've got me worried now - do poppycocks break very often and are they hard to get hold of? Do you think I should carry a spare when I go to Syco's do tomorrow?' (I'm travelling 80, possibly 100 miles each way - hardcore I know, but you have to do these 'trips of a lifetime')

Having said this, perhaps they are 1200 specific and my 1100 doesn't have a poppycock?
