Emilio Scotto from Argentina writes in his book 'The Longest Ride' about his 10 year 500,000 mile journey around the world (both ways), on his fully laden 1980 Honda Goldwing. The punishment this machine received is mind boggling, but when you consider that the 'Black Princess' as he calls it, covered 280,000 miles before he changed the engine. All it used until that point was petrol and oil and some of that quite dubious stuff. Yes it needed the side stand re welded at one point, but no failure of the shaft drive, oil leaks or electrical failures!
It does beg the question that if he was embarking on that journey today, would he be doing it on a GS1200? and if he did how far would he get?
It's well worth a read for any ADV bike fan. It makes Ewan and Charlie look like a couple of day trippers.
