Would you by an ex-Off Road School XChallenge?

Depending on price and condition (and probably subject to a minimum of a 6 month's warranty so I could establish if the frame is sound by bouncing on the fucker extremely vigorously when I got it home), yes of course.

Would you ever buy a bike from a bloke called Dave?

Yep, without hesitation.:thumb I had one of their ex 1200GS last year. Should have kept it:rolleyes:

I've bought bikes from a lot of Daves, and I should know better.

I saw a ZZR600 on ebay recently, which I suspected had been clocked.

When I mailed the seller about it his reply was

"Nice price, don't worry about it"

In my Hall of Shame is a CB500 that turned out to be a Cat C, a Blackbird with completely written off fairings (they stayed on, but some numpty had destroyed the fasteners on the inside) that also been a Cat D, and a couple of XTZ750s that had seen many better days.

I loved all of them, of course.

Price? milage?

Not used much the last two years.

The seller is someone I trust as a person, but the bike has probably had a hard life.

Almost certainly had a hard life.

Price is less than £2500, which seems the rock-bottom for the X.

My 2009 X Challenge was a ex-BMW offroad school bike.

Brought it for £2300 two years ago with a estimated 2000 miles on the clocks (old clocks were replaced by the school but service history backed it up). The photos aren't too clear but it had had a hard start to life lots of dents and scratches. I only really brought the bike as it was going cheap and local, to use for green lanning but it kinda of grew on me and is now my only adventure bike after loosing my pride and joy R100GSPD :(.

Its cleaned up quite well and I've added another 5,000 miles so far across Morocco. Only problems i've had are failed sprag clutch, leaking radiator, split front brake hose and damaged/worn cam shafts which were found on the 6,000 miles service even though have been replaced l still dont know how they became damaged.

Yup I did, no problems with it at all. What's the issue?

I'm not the only one this happened to then!

Sent from my iPhone whilst driving and even with autocorrect I can't spell!

I've had an ex ORS F650 Dakar and there was no problems with it whatsoever.

Mate currently has an ex ORS XCountry and, other than the obvious dents and scratches, mechanically spot on.

Tatters_2005's XChallenge looks a good buy. I paid £1200+ more for mine from a private bod and, whilst it was mint, would query what extra 'value' the extra cost added, particularly if you end up trail riding on it anyway.

All the above have the low maintainance F650 based engines though, and are renowned for being robust. I would be more careful re the higher stressed bikes, such as the G450x range.

It wouldn't put me off.

Out of the box the XC is fine for trail riding and rallies.

if you want anything more from the bike, the chances are most of the standard parts will end up in the skip or on ebay anyway, as they make way for things like decent wheels, lights, seat and proper suspension.

As long as the engine is sound, why not?

IIRC vines were originally selling the ORS bike's at around £2500 if this helps with valuation.

While it was not ORS, mine was used by Vines as a promo bike which meant that one of their mechanics raced it in a few events. I bought it in 2008 with 650 miles and a few scrapes for 3200. It now has 43k on the clock.

iirc walter colebatch bike was an ex ors bike and he's done plenty with his :p
