Wow! 6k service

Just had a 6k and annual service plus extra bit to clean the breaking system.
All done immaculately well as usual, but these girls are expensive...... £330!!

If I keep it once its out of warranty I may have to start spannering again.

BTW: anyone know of any independents near Peterborough?

6k service on my GSA just cost me £303
Don't know how much for a VFR, but I've just taken my Duc in for a "big" service (every 2 years) and that's quoted at £600+ In fairness though, the "small" service (intermediate years) is only about £200
I rationalise this by telling myself if you ride a thoroughbred you've got to expect higher Vet's bills

Reckon I'll be getting the spanners out after the warranty period too.

But that does not come up until about 24k - about the same time your GS will be presenting you with a £600 bill. The VFR also does not need two services like BMW's annual AND mileage system.

Plus of course the OP bought a GS and not a VFR, I could point out a Ferrari costs quite a bit to service as well, but that is also irrelevant.

The GS is not a cheap bike to maintain, my dealer told me 6k services were £180 and 12k ones £220 - or at least their sales guy did, once I owned one and needed a service I found out the prices were actually £250 and £400

Needless to say I sold it before the 24k service came around.

Take your time and DIY, they are easy to work on and you get a lot of satisfaction out of it, plus you know what has been done. Yes you have to buy a few tools, but only once. I telephoned BMW customer service and queried if I did it myself would it invalidate the warranty. "No" was his reply as long as you use genuine BMW parts and the correct lubricants, and if any problem that manifests itself is not down to my bad servicing, his example being "like if the oil filter releases the oil because you didn't tighten it properly" as if!
I did my last boxer for 6 of its 7 years that I owned it and this CAMHEAD I have now seems easier as my last one had evo brakes and valve rockers rather than semi-sphere shims.

I think you'll find it does if you want the brake fluid changed, which is about the only major item done on BMW's 'annual only' type service.

Irrelevant, yes - the GS and the VFR are put to much the same use and I (and others, I suspect) keep looking across to the VFR at bike-change time.

I think there is an (un)fair variation by region, my local dealer charges £400 for a 12k service and told me to expect £500+ for the 24k service.

They also tell me the servicing costs of the S1000RR are actually lower and the GS is not a particularly cheap bike to service as it needs valves adjusting and throttle bodies balanced on every service - something that only needs doing every 24k on my Yamaha (and most Jap bikes require far less fettling)

It will certainly be cheaper for dealer servicing on my Tenere, but once warranty is up I can do most of it myself without needing expensive specialist tools and computer diagnostic equipment like with BMW's - and even if you buy all that lot you then need specialist knowledge to operate said equipment.

The Tenere requires no specialist knowledge on operating such equipment - as long as you can wield basic tools such as spanners / screwdrivers and operate a torque wrench your good to go with 95% of the servicing requirements, you do not even need to buy weird star shaped sockets.

All dealerships vary as their all franchised apart from park lane London ,so can ask what they want!!! But if you get good service why moan about the cost ,my local dealer is your old one and I get looked after with all my dealings ,an I won't be buying an overpriced Yamaha that'll be worthless in 4years either no matter how much praise you give it .

I do all the oily and mechanical bits and pass the bike over to Wollaston BMW to do the fault code reading, set the throttle bodies and since I don't like working with brake fluid they change it for me as well every year. Doesn't cost a lot and I keep the receipts for the oil, filters and spark plugs which I buy from Opie Oils and Motorworks. If I remember correctly it was around the £200 mark all in but some additional work was done by BMW which I asked for. Wollaston treats me good and I've never had a problem with them.

Yep but you pays your money and takes your choice where you get it serviced and the resale service stamp BMW does help at resale time or trade in

The trade in value of my GS at a shade under 4 years old was less than half the new price, can't see it faring much worse than that.

Not that I buy bikes to make money on, which is lucky as I have never made a bean on any of 'em.

With the 6k service being about half of what people seem to pay on the BMW I should save quite a bit on servicing over the 4 years, and without having to worry about a £1500 FD failure.

Although if the dealer is honest up front about service costs and does the job properly I have no problem with their charges, just no longer wish to pay such high amounts.

Good points on resale value with BMW stamp, but with Japanese bikes I find not having a franchised dealer stamp is less of an issue, so if I do self service the bike I am not undoing half the savings by massively lowering resale value like I would with a BMW.

Since when did a FD failure cost £1500 ? Pretty sure you can get them fixed for a fair bit less than that.
