Hi Guys,
I'm slightly at my wits end. Since I bought my relatively low miles (9400) x-country last September I have had a few issues. First steering head bearings were shot. I bought bit online assured it was up together but there you go. Next some scrot nicked the instrument panel and then shortly after in mid October it developed a fault. I use the bike for an 18 mile each way commute into central London after between 8 and 10 miles in the bike died when the throttle was shut off. Started again ok but repeated the fault every time the throttle was closed.
I took it to a local repair guy who is a trained BMW 'technician' who plugged in a diagnostic thingy and could see the cut outs. he reset everything and ok was ok for 2 days. He then suggested that it needed a 'part' and put it on order. I couldn't use the bike with the fault as filtering in London often left me stranded in the middle of the road with a dead bike. Not ideal.
Fast forward 4 months (as it took that long to get the illusive part from BMW) £250 bill part fitted used the bike and the fault is still there!!! I generally ride all year round but had to use the train for around 4 months while waiting. The long awaited part was the ignition pick up which was around £180 + labour BTW
I took the bike back and the technician used it for a week and couldn't replicate the fault. He then mentioned something about a throttle sensor and replaced that. Last week I picked the bike up and used it without fault on the usual commute for three days....happy days:).
Today all full of hope and the sun is out. Off to Londinium and 8 miles in same fault. Bastard thing dies on throttle shut off. Rest of the time the bike runs well and is fun but totally useless in traffic.
Sorry for the long post. Anyone else had this kind of experience and fixed it?
Not sure what to do next.

Hi
Just an idea
Is there enough slack in the throttle cable ? ( try it on full lock) the reason I ask is because if you start it with the bars turned and it has slightly open the throttle it may think that that position is fully closed when it is not , also if you start it with the throttle slightly open can cause the same problem.
Also is the idle control valve clean , but at your mileage it should be ok.

Good idea thanks. When I left work last night I started the bike with the bars straight and it cut out as the usual fault. I stopped halfway home to get petrol and then started it with the bars on full lock. No cutting out! I started on full lock this morning and again the bike idled perfectly for the whole journey. Could be problem solved but I wont hold my breath.

I also looked on ADVrider as Chrisjk and PeterNI suggested and found lots about the idle control valve. I had no idea it had one. I'm also surprised that the BMW technician that worked on the bike didn't mention it. Anyhow I'll give that a clean too.

Hi
Looks like you are part way to solving the problem ?
Is the software up to date ? (did the dealers tell you )
Did they reset the adaption values ? ( should have read previous posts looks like he did reset)

I'm pretty sure everything has been reset. One thing you may be able to advise on....and this is going to sound a bit thick. There are two throttle bodies on an xcountry arent there? I assume there is only one idle control valve. Is that correct? I'm more of a carb guy and haven't really fiddled much with EFI set ups. I cant find a workshop manual for an xcountry that is Mac compatible so I'll have to just go for it. From the look of some images on ADVrider it doesnt seem too complicated.

You only need to remove seat and right panel to get access to AIC
Thanks. That's really helpful. I thought there was only one throttle body but got confused when looking at some parts James Sherlock has on eBay. One of his listings is 'BMW-G650X-country-2007-unknown-mileage-throttle-bodies-pair'.....?

Nick G ... you put a post up asking for any parts or accessories for your newly acquired Xcountry.
I PM'd you and replied to the post re a windscreen etc but you chose to totally ignore me :(

Now I'm not one to bear malice ... but I feckin' hate bad manners

Now a very good friend of mine (Mr Smooth of this Parish, one of our Compo, Clegg and
Foggy trio) has an Xcountry, and of late it was running very rough!!

All the checks were done, nothing to be found, but Top Technician Leigh and Service Manager Steve at Rainbow suggested that it could be a loose baffle in the exhaust. Has been known before, on more than one occasion

Long story short ... Mr Smooth fits my exhaust on to his bike and problem solved ... now who would have thought it eh?

Hope this helps ...

Sorry for not replying last year. I thought I had but there you go. Having cleaned the idle control valve and throttle body all seems ok now....fingers crossed.
