When the three main UK political parties stand together and say no to an independent Scotland sharing the UK pound, you better believe it won't happen.

Until, I read this I thought you were being serious PMSFL

I have just come back from a week in Northamptonshire and of course the topic of Scottish Independence comes up quite a lot in conversation with people when they hear your accent. I was shocked at the level of resentment about the whole process coming from people who did not appear to have any obvious political agenda. They see that the uncertainty caused by the referendum will hit their pension funds, mortgage rate and possibly their job prospects. Right at the top of the agenda was a real determination that if the Scots go for independence there was to be no monitory union as a point of principal. I found myself echoing the SNP position that the least disruption for both sides would be a formal currency sharing agreement with the bank of England as the lender of last resort but the attitude was overwhelmingly against such a move. I really don't think the SNP understand just how hard it would be for any party to sell this idea to the English electorate even if blocking such a move would cost them money. They have had no say in a process that is already impacting on their financial well being and this single issue is one that they see as being their "line in the sand" where they can make a stand. One old guy told me he had moved his bank account from Nat West to Santander because he had heard that Nat West was owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland and he was afraid there would be a run on Scottish banks following a yes vote.

If this whole independence thing causes a serious financial downturn then our fellow UK citizens are going to start regarding all Scots with the same loathing they currently reserve for bankers and we know how much hatred there is for them.

The SNP want a currency union with a country that doesn't want one with them (Scotland) bit like forced / arranged marriages , not only that a forced and arranged marriage to something you've just divorced. Why should the UK under right an independent Scotland ?

He will be in no position to dictate anything.

I think those parties know a currency union is best, but they maintain a front for two reasons:

1 - They see it as being a staunch ultimatum that if it prevents a YES vote - it will never have to be put to the test.
2) -If there still is a YES vote - going back on it will be the least of their problems.

It's a "Hail Mary" from them.

3) The Czech and Slovakia currency union lasted 6 weeks, and that was with economies closely aligned. (Historical Fact)

Scotland hasn't got an economy yet, by that I mean in the sense nothing tangible that can be measured, because it's all mixed in with the UK economy. Sure there are a lots of estimates, but very few facts.

4) The whole eurozone is an absolute basket case. If they had a choice, they would probably be rid of it in a flash.

Apologies for butting in and not having not read this thread.......

We're on our way back from Barcelona and on our last day there was a huge demo for Catalan independence on the streets. There were loads of Scottish flags flying :) and lots of people I spoke to wished they too could have a referendum and wished you guys well.

So, from Cataluña (and me) go guys go!

soooo its going to be close (just look at the results of this pole above!), if its say 51 vs 49 and a yes what will that really mean in Scotland?

Effectively half the population being forced to leave, the other half very happy. No malice meant by this comment/thought, just genuinely interested in peoples views on what effect this will have ? Do you think people will just accept the result and move on or will this create another round of uncertainty and doubt???

sorry thats leave...as in Scotland leaving the UK not people just moving some where else!

I have real belief in my people, to make this dream a reality, all this talk of Armageddon is absolute BS, why do they think that Scotland would do any worse than New Zealand, Norway or similar populated countries? If anything we can outperform them all and I hope to see it in my lifetime. I'm afraid being ruled by a political party with one MP in our country and who no one votes for is completely undemocratic and is not acceptable anymore in this country? How would they feel in England if wee Eck stood for Worcester, got voted in and ruled the country with one MP?, fekin mayhem?

My house is split in two, wife and son NO, me and daughter YES......... only two days to turn them round to the light!!! :beerjug:

My son and daughter have already voted No.
Wife an I will be YES.
So neutral from our 4 votes.
I suspect there will be a great deal of this throughout the country.

I think rUK would do the right thing to support an independant Scottland and help make it a success because at the end if the day we'd know that c50% did not want this and the long term future is more important than today and treating those that want a YES with the same attitude they seem to show those that question what they want...

Judging by some of the posts to date from our English contributors..........................

They will be a bunch of vindictive cnuts. :rob

How many people are saying they'll vote one way because of peer pressure, but once in the booth will vote differently?

Sent this by an English mate.

SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE

If Scotland gains its independence after the forthcoming referendum, the remainder of the United Kingdom will be known as the "Former United Kingdom" (FUK).

In a bid to discourage Scots from voting 'yes' in the referendum, the Government is planning a campaign with the slogan "Vote NO, for FUK's sake".

They feel that Scottish voters will be able to relate to this.

The polls still say that 50 % of the population are gonna be right pissed off come Friday..............err great grounding for a harmonious future innit :nenau.
