I have just come back from a week in Northamptonshire... was shocked at the level of resentment about the whole process... uncertainty... will hit their pension funds, mortgage rate... job prospects... our fellow UK citizens are going to start regarding all Scots with the same loathing they currently reserve for bankers...
This is the first time I've seen this put into words and you are right. There's a huge resentment amongst the general population about the way this is being handled. Salmond comes across as a nasty greedy person, deliberately stirring up ill-feeling against the English.
If the divorce goes ahead, everything negative that comes down the line is going to get blamed on Scotland. It will be the most divisive thing that has happened to our united kingdom since the (English) civil war and the resentment against the pariah state will last generations.
Perhaps Scotland had better brush the dust off the Auld Alliance (if France is interested).
Yes you can hate Margaret Thatcher for the poll tax but we hate Gordon Brown for what he did to private pensions (far, far worse).
