Yet another starter problem

Having leafed through other posts, I'm amazed that they run at all...

OK, my 2001 GS1150 failed to start - clock resets to zero and all you hear is the relay chattering.

It still fails to start having swapped in (one at a time) a known good starter and a known good starter relay. And it won't start if you try to slave it (with a known good starter and known good starter relay). Fuses look fine, although there doesn't seem to be a "starter" fuse; and I can hear the fuel pump coming on line when the ignition is switched on.

A quick whizz through posts here indicates that it could yet be the existing battery - is it worth replacing it with a known good one (as opposed to slaving it)?

Otherwise, what else should I check?

Any / all thoughts gratefully received...

Cheers,

James

My ignition wire played up and gave me the same... to test wiggle the wire protruding from the key barrel... If funny stuff happens it could be it. Nothing to loose! Not sure if my clock reset though... but as I got when I tried to start the bike was clicking from around the fuze box area... but I'm half deaf so who knows where it was really coming from.

Why are you looking at all the obscure things you can possibly think of yet ignoring the blatantly obvious?
:blast

YOUR BATTERY IS FUCKED!

Does it start using jump leads?

If it does - and the odds are it will - buy a new battery. The starters are not a common issue with these.

Cheers, guys I'll give both a go. Cream crackered battery was my initial diagnosis, but it won't jump start and the starter wouldn't run off the bike. I'll physically swap in the replacement battery and see if that makes a difference. I'm as keen as anyone not to get involved in wiring, but I'll have a look at the ignition leads.

Hey ho...

Don't think so but thanks for the suggestion. It starts and runs fine having both replaced the battery (jump starting didn't work), and fitted a known good starter motor. I have the original on the bench - I have continuity through the motor but it won't turn, so I'll take a closer look when I get a chance.

Bit wierd if both battery and starter have gone together though.

Not really the starter could be starting to sieze up taking more and more current with each start till the starter jams draining the battery past the point of no return before you own it goosed battery and starter
