Liz and Myself are staying in a cottage in Buckden (a small village but with a good PUB I understand) north of Skipton for a week next month. We've done Skipton, Hawes and Devils Bridge in the past. Any suggestions of other ''must do'' on road routes around this area please. cheers

I'll start the ball rolling..

Bolton Abbey and The Strid - just don't fall in.

Buttertubs Pass & Alston

Russell -- You mention that you've done Hawes but , just in case , it's worth stating the obvious and pointing you to the Buttertubs , (Hawes to Thwaite road) , it really is the most inspiring road , whichever direction you ride it .

Also , as you'll be coming that far south of your usual riding grounds , you'd be advised to go via Alston and "enjoy" the A686 , (Alston to Penrith road) . All the roads out of Alston are good , but the A686 is the most rewarding - beware both some of the race reps and police presence , if you ride that road on a sunny weekend , as it has a local reputation that attracts both in some numbers .

Enjoy the change , and let us know how you and Liz get on .

All the best , Jim .

When you get to the end of it, hang a left to Keld, then turn right up on to to tops to Tan Hill Inn (as in the Everest adverts) http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=haw...ls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-35,GGGL:en&um=1&sa=N&tab=wl
The road isn't the best in the area, but the views across the top are great.

Pretty much ANY road in the area is great on a GS tho.

Look at going further north to the borders area too. The roads are even better up there, and easily doable in a day (I run a tour at Penrith every easter and tend to head up there on Sunday as there is less police and tourists).
Highly recommended is head over the Hartside and stay on the A686 all the way to Haydon Bridge, then pick up the B6320 to Bellingham

Take the left just after the bridge, and follow it to Kielder Water (nice Cafe at the visitor centre for lunch) then on over the Border. Turn right to Bonchester Bridge, then left to Hawick.
From there you can either blast south on the fast but fun A7, or nip up the A7 to Selkirk and take the most excellent A708 past St Mary's Loch (another decent cafe at the western end of) to Moffat. B7020 takes you south parallel to the Mway but MUCH more fun. Longtown Brampton Kirkoswald makes a fun route back to the Dales.

indeed I do Abel but thanks anyway:thumb I like the sound of the Tan Hill inn area, I'll def.give that a look. Cheers everyone for all this info:clap I'll be studying the map tonight finding all these places:beer:
