You all told me.....

We met a fairly hardcore & young, fit MTB rider on a fancy Lapierre on the fell tops yesterday (we were on the trail bikes ) and had a chat

He was doing 30++miles off-road on a normal bike yesterday

He said he daren’t try a eMTB as he would be converted despite initially scorning then 2-3 years ago

He would (if he did) buy a Levo SL at 14kg as he wanted a light eMTB but with power assist for the hills so he could do more downhills in his rides

Interesting chat

My old non elec Marin is nearly 13 kilo.
I need to update

To everyone that thinks that ebikes are cheating (I was one of them), if you want to burn loads of calories, just ride it switched off.

This is the first quarter of today’s ride. Arsey is going to get me a medal, he said, when I text him the pictures earlier. :beerjug:

Hows the suspension holding up ? Not that I think there would be any issues just wondering if you wished you got one with higher spec sussies

Bloody hell, it took 604 miles to burn 552 calories!! :P:D

Silly boy :blast :D

Yeah, it’s good, but I’d like something a bit higher, as the pedals keep grounding out over rough ground. Probably rider error, but sometimes the timing isn’t quite right. I’m still pissed the ebike shop talked me out of a 160, as that’s what I’d decided to get.

Maybe not. The pedals on an Ebike are generally spaced slightly wider apart than a non ebike, and this is enough to make grounding (more rubbing) more common than on a standard bike.

The rider error comment was tongue in cheek, as I’ve been riding mountain bikes for over 30 years, and this has never happened on other bikes. It’s bloody annoying.

Have to say I'm swithering towards a 160 27.5 now myself, had a brief shot on a Giant Reign during the week, absolute beast of a thing it was but have always been put off 27.5 til I seen that with MASSOOOVIE tyres on it.

Interesting about the higher part as the stuff I'm looking to ride the bottom half of the bike will take an absolute pounding.

I bent my crank hitting a tree root - It’s a common eMTB issue.

Glad it’s not just me then.

Will a 160 with 27.5 wheels be any higher than a 140 with 29 wheels?

Tbh, after falling off last week I wouldn’t want it any higher, but it would be good if the pedals didn’t ground out so easily.

I don't know if it would or wouldn't but I just think of the stuff I've done before and the BB area just gets hammered with big rocks, think it might need a bash guard, did you see the one the guy custom made for another bloke on the emtb forum, looks the bollocks.

Stick 2.6 or 2.8 tyres will make a fair difference in height for you btw, that Giant I tried had 2.6's on, guy said he was thinking of putting 2.8 DH tyres on but those 2.6's were enormous. Udders may be able to point you in the direction of DH tyres possibly.

*EDIT you might struggle to get plus sized tyres to fit your bike ??

I think on road bikes you can buy and fit shorter crank arms , not sure if this is the case with E MTB, a shorter crank might give you more Ground clearance .

You're sure to hit ruts or tree roots that no matter what clearance you have, or how short your cranks are...you will ground out. It's simply about reading the trail...isn't it?

Yes! This. If you’re having strike problems try shorter crank arms. You may only need to go 10 or 20mm shorter. ( is you’re suspension set too much on the soft side? ) :D

The difference between 140 and 160 is purely the suspension travel. The ride height should be almost identical on the different bikes. I have a 140 and don’t normally use all that travel. If you do, simply put the pressure up a tad. 160’s are nice but unless you’re doing some serious jumps or drop offs you shouldn’t need it.
