Wanted Zenith El Primero Rainbow Flyback

Good luck in your search

Do Sugess make a homage, the originals might be hard to find ??

I have a Sugess homage to the El Primero “Safari” with a seagull movement and it is a stunning piece.

Nice but, I'm after an original, like this one ...

A couple on eBay from £2300 upwards, or £4000.

The cheaper one looks battered and needs a bezel replacement.

I have looked at these. They are both overseas (France and Italy or USA ??) and therefore Vat is to be added, plus import duties etc.

A well known member on here had one but sold it to another GSer via the site, I think. That was a few years ago though.

If you want a good vintage watch with a bit of colour that's "chunky" and about the size of El Primo have a look at the Tissot Seastar Navigator from the 1970's with the Valjoux 7734 movement .... at that time Tissot made really nice watches......... you should get a really good one for well under £1,000 ........... Tissot at that time were say mid-market and Zenith had a higher end reputation ......... but I have always liked the Navigator, and "vintage" has more character, IMO, than modern "bling" ....... you could treat it as a "stop gap" until you find the "Rainbow" model which now are difficult to find and expensive.

I owned a Zenith El Primero for a while this one :

I regret selling it

A very interesting story about how they survived the Quartz takeover with one of their watchmakers hiding away all the designs and stuff

Those are very nice, never heard of them. I have always believed Tissot to be a good make of watch.

Thanks for the info.

I bought this recently, so the Tissot style is of interest....

I think any watch from the 60's,70's or early to mid 80' is interesting, pre quartz, (although there are some attractive quartz watches of the 80's) ........ and pre the Swatch Group which hoovered up a lot of Swiss makers who could not compete when quartz came along.
I suppose pre digital was a time when you bought a mechanical wrist to "tell the time" more, if you see what I mean, it was a time when there were lots of different looking watches were made........ and if you are interest in watches they are great to collect like your "first series" 6309 7040/9, (if you are interested in Seiko "divers" read about the 6105 8110 and then you might want one!)
These days servicing is important for older watches and certain movements can still be serviced at a reasonable cost, say £250 to £350.

Unfortunately, I see most of the watches produced today as "bling" including many Rolex models, just my personal opinion.

Or you could try a manual wind Zodiac Chrono from the 1970's with the Valjoux 7734 movement ..... just a few 100 £'s certainly under £1,000 for a really good one ....... and you would wear a watch that not many have

Here's mine which I have had from sometime ........ but it's a big chunk of metal on your wrist

IMHO they look good - (now I've got it out I think that I will look for another)
