Austria and Italy are included in Western Europe, Czech Republic isn't though.

The whole of the Czech Republic is 77MB in 2013.10, this would fit in alongside Western Europe as the primary mapping on a Zumo 660. You'd need to use MapInstall or Mapsource to generate the required file.

Which is?

Talking about maps going back to 2008.... how do I get rid of them from the drop down list on road trip?

:beerjug:

Don't know about Macs, you're on your own on that one :D

On a Windows PC just use the 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. each map-set is listed separately. Surely Macs have something similar, I thought they were meant to be user friendly :nenau

As a practice I downloaded the Western Europe portion to the 660, then used mapinstall for Croatia / Slovenia / BiH and Serbia without too much grief.

The "map info" screen shows the above have been installed, just need to try downloading a route that crosses all the options to see if it's a seamless process.

In the interests of experimentation and greater understanding I tried the same last night with the Prague tile. Then plotted a route from airport to hotel in city centre and uploaded to /Garmin/GPX/ on the microSD card in my 660, worked as expected. Copied to SD card in Nuvi (also updated to 2013.10) and it worked there as well.

As a precaution I ensured that 2013.10 on the PC was unlocked to both Zumo 660 and Nuvi 765T in Mapsource before trying. Writing the GMAPSUPP.IMG file also generated 2 small .GMA files which I copied across, along with the mapping, to the /Garmin/ folder on the SD cards in both GPSRs. I'm pretty sure that these contain the required unlock codes, not sure which applies to which GPS but having both didn't seem to cause any issues.

I think I've found them....... :thumb

So, after more than a day spent messing around trying to get all of Europe (City Navigator NT Europe 2013.10) onto my Zumo, I have to concede defeat.
I have the whole 2013.10 loaded onto my Mac with no probs, and this shows OK in Base Camp.

However, at present, on the Zumo I have the NT Europe 2012, which shows all the countries, including Northern Europe, Western Europe and Eastern Europe etc. So how come , all of a sudden the 2013 Europe NT is unable to fit onto a Zumo 660 ?
What is the point ? I have a Lifetime Maps guarantee, but can't use it apart from "some " of Europe .
I will be travelling across Western Europe, down into Slovenia, Croatia, Kosovo, Bosnia, and maybe Montenegro. Might even touch Bulgaria and Romania again on the way back.
Next year may go North up through Finland and Eastern Baltic. But it would appear that I'm unable to fit this modest trip/s onto my Zumo 660. WTF are Garmin playing at ? There is no other motorbike Garmin with a larger memory that I know of; a little iPod or iPhone can pack away about 16 Gig of ram, so why not a Zumo ?
Their poxy download system says insufficient space on the Zumo, despite chucking out all un-needed voices, vehicles, JPEGs etc.
What Garmin do NOT say is how big each Region Map is, and so I am unable to calculate exactly which map/s will or will not fit onto the Zumo. Crazy crazy Garmin......they really do not want to make life easy for the poor consumer.
I have had my Zumo for maybe 3 summers now, and overall been pretty good- it's their software and downloads that make me curse - every time. Why are Garmin so inept at making user friendly map downloads and updates.:blast

If you open up Mapsouce, zoom out 500miles, use the 'Map Selection' tool to highlight the maps you want.... click on 'Maps' in the left hand pane, at the bottom it will show you how many maps have been selected and the size of the file...

Hi Sleepy,
yes, Map Install does something similar, but is very unfriendly to use, and its "lassooing" procedure just laughable.....
As you may have gathered, I'm on a Mac, so Mapsource not readily available to me ( don't use BootCamp or Fusion etc !).

Although I know there are "ways around" the map size problem, I suppose the nub of my argument is just "why" ? Why should we have to jump through hoops simply because Garmin either can't be arsed, or is incapable of making map updates and downloads a simple procedure.
When running Lifetime Updater, when it shows the options for the alternative smaller maps (eg W Europe, or Eastern or Central Europe), why can it not indicate map sizes at that point, and one can thus assess how much space is either available or needed to load specific map/s ?
The easier Garmin can make it, the more maps they are likely to sell, and the more customer/brand loyalty they build up .

I've paid for my Lifetime Updates, and now I can't update like for like - looks like a serious retrograde step to me, but what do I know .....I'm just a customer.

Garmin Map Upgrade or root canal work - just let me think about that for a moment before I decide please.:(

Seems rather silly all the grief in having to have all four corners of Europe on the GPS, when most of the time it isn't going outside of a 750 miles from the ferry port.

Download selection number 2 from the drop down. It covers Western Europe. Add the maps you need (provided you need them) onto an SD card. Job done. I agree with you that Garmin should state that the whole map won't fit on the standard unit to save them and the users a lot of grief.

Do as above :thumb2

Garmin are allegedly developing a new updater that will write to both the GPS and the SD card to try and offer a solution. They realise that this is a frustrating aspect of the update process. This is according to the CS bod I had a discussion with a few weeks ago. Apparently won't work with all models, we'll have to wait and see...

Just a bit of info - I have to have an old version of Windows Explorer for a web based communications system at work (loading a newer version renders the site useless.) Anyway ALL my problems with downloading the update were purely to do with "old" technology so the only way round it I could find for myself was to download Google Chrome which sorted my problems straight away.

Just thought I would post in case any others were having a similar issue.

According to Google Maps, Podgorica in Montenegro is 1400 miles by the fastest route, so I'm likely to be going a tad further than your estimate of 750 miles. And like to take the small roads most of the time too.
Sat Nav is as useful for 100 miles or 1000 miles !

Thanks NLC and Bumpkin - that looks like a way round the problem.
I think Garmin should run a Weekend OU course on how to "navigate" their software maze- :blast And then they should'phone Apple and ask them how they can make 32 Gig of RAM available in the modestly sized iPhone. Just a suggestion Mr Garmin.:D

I am a total computer numpty.....but here goes.

1. Does a brand spanking new Zumo550 have the same size memory storage
as my 5 year old one?

2. If it does and I bought the latest version why is it that Garmin can get the
latest maps onto the new unit and I can't get it onto mine?

If it has more memory of course then ignore question 2 :D

Told you I was a "numpty".

As the clock ticks away waiting for Garmin to reply to email... I have reinstalled Western Europe on the 660.
Routes made up in Basecamp go over to the unit ok, yesterday's route goes to the Mac ok.
But now when it starts up, the 660 says "maps cannot be authenticated".
Wtf?
Worked fine before. Unit shows two maps. The 2013 map and the 3D version.
Bumpkin?
