I was in Touratech (Hamburg) shop today and had to buy an auxiliary bar to fit the Zumo Locking Touratech cradle to the windscreen support bars. I had the cradle with me, complete with Zumo connector base and soldered on BMW plug ready to install.

The Touratech guy commented that the had seen a lot of problems with the Zumo charging from the CanBus (basically it seems the CanBus switches off) and the Zumo wasn't being charged. In a couple of cases he said customer's Zumo batteries had been destroyed and he recommended connecting direct to the 1200GSA battery via an on-line fuse. This is how BMW wire, or recommend wiring up the BMW version of the Garmin Zumo.

I know that the CanBus will switch off a few minutes after the ignition key is removed, but hadn't previously heard any problems associated with a CanBus connection.

What is the opinion/experience of forum members here?

Thanks

I have a zumo 660 on my 1200gs powered via the canbus socket under the instruments which i find works fine, just have to remember that the satnav will power down when bike turned off.

Ditto

As above, mines connected into the canbus socket located within the nose cone area and when the ignition is set to off will power down therefore telling you the canbus has switched power off to that outlet.

Hi Stever1 and Les049

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like it should be OK to go with the BMW dedicated fitting. Maybe others have had problems because of this corrosion issue, which is sometimes reported on this forum.

I will try the dedicated plug if I can find it in the wiring system.

Thanks

The corrosion problems tend to be on the systems that are powered from the battery without an off switch.

This is exactly what happens to mine. I have fiddled & cursed all to no avail but hadn't considered it might be the canbus. It worked fine until recently, about 2 years or so and works fine on the battery - until it flattens. I will now try wiring it direct although I chopped out the in line fuse that came with the cradle (as you do'y need it with the canbus) so a trip to Halfords seems in order.
