My ZUMO cradle stopped charging/starting the GPS unit. The fuse is ok and swapping the cradle with a friend's has my unit working fine, so something has been fried inside the cradle most probably. I have ordered a new one but wondering whether the mulfunction was caused by powering the cradle direct from the battery( not switched) Any thoughts????

More than likely it's your power cable - Garmin replace it free of charge if you ask them.

Try cleaning both sets of contacts on the mount and on the Zumo.

The power pin which is back left on the mount, goes a dark colour and needs buffing up with a fine abrasive to keep it bright and shiney.
Be carefull cleaning the contact on the Zumo as it is partially laquered and I made the mistake of cleaning it with a spirit which dissolved some of the double sided sticky tape glue which fixes the foam ring onto the body. You can see this in the way of the contact in the picture but it still works OK.

cradle

I just had the same thing - stopped charging - fuse OK, lead OK, device OK.
When booking a service with Vines, they said the most likely reason was the cradle. They have seen many similar situations. He also suggested to contact Garmin and claim a replacement. It is a problem they know well and are keen to have 'happy customers'. I will try this anyway. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for your replies. iTs the cradle for sure that is the problem but regard less do you think is wise to connect it directly to the battery???

I don't see why not as long as you keep the inline fuse on the power lead. Had no problems in 2yrs of using the Zumo connected directly to the battery. i don't like the Canbus on the 1200GS

I had mine directly connected and because there's a constant current, if there's any any moisture, electrolysis causes corrosion of the power pin. I brushed the green oxidation off with a toothbrush and the bloody pin popped out rendering the cradle useless! - Anyway, Garmin were pretty good and replaced it FOC, but the moral of the story is don't leave it powered on permanently even with nothing in the cradle..

I had the same problem, power connection on the Zumo itself corroded. Garmin replaced both unit and cradle under warranty. I do now make sure I don't leave the unit connected any longer than necessary, and I clear any moisture away from the cradle contacts.
