In this first instalment we'll have a quick look at what we need to start the job.

First a prepped tank, in this case a HPN jobbie which has been rubbed down with a med course sandpaper to help the base coat key into the plastic. This is important coz you don't want your paint flaking off:augie

then we've got the TOOLS of the trade. I use a HVLP (high volume low pressure) detail gun for the the main colour coating. We spray at 40psi with this gun starting with a light dust coat to key things in followed by 2 wet coats.
I use two types of airbrush, both a twin action and single action type. The twin action gun is ideal to do fine detail where as the single is great for just filling in small areas of full colour.

Then we have the paint. This is a litre of Rosso Luminesso which is as close as i can get to the original 1985 colour, i also have alpine white for the other bits. Both are twin pack which means the use of a good breathing system cos this stuff is not nice:eek

This is my selection of autoair water based colour, with any luck i'll be able to mix and play about to get the right colours for the finer details like the sponser stickers on the original.

So there we go. Next i'll get the undercoat onto the tank and we can start with the good stuff:thumb2

This is good stuff:bow Question is the tank plastic or nylon? As my plastic tank has now pealed and bubbled.

simple answer is

nylon can be painted plastic is harder. If you can find out what type of plastic its made of then a bonding coat can be found to suit.

here's what i've got to work from

with any replica jobbie having a good referance is key to the job looking right.
This is what i've got to work from. the net has loads of pics of these bikes but most are of the 86 bike which is very different (even the colour isn't the same) so all i have is the Tamiya kit. I've also removed the original stickers that were on the bike as they are pretty bloody close so can be used for size and colour referance.

How did you manage to remove the stickers without them falling to bits? Presumably they've been on there for a fair while now. Steam?

haha, you'll never believe me

Its a bit like trying to slip the wife one while she's asleep(so i'm told :augie) you've got to move slow n gentle:D
Its just a matter of applying a little heat then peeling evenly and slowly, Takes flippin ages:eek

here's an idea rob

Don`t know if you already know but you`ll need to neutralise and plasticise the tank before painting it.
If you don`t the finish will bubble and go to shite due to petrol fumes leeching through.

If in doubt have a word with Martin at MotoBuild in Burscough as he did my Acerbis 45 litre tank on my LegoBike and the paint never gave any problems.

you got any idea

And when you've finished Rob's bike I have a Rallye Bike that needs tarting up too:D

of a colour or look you want. Only ask cos the sort of jobs i fancy doing are the works copy types rather than painting just one flat colour. Its the thought that goes into getting all the logo's right and the order they need to go in that i find interesting, all the flatting down and prep is a pain in the arse:D

AAhh but the preparation is the most important bit. skimp that and the rest will not be good . remember the crocodile skin mini?

Anyway Im watching this as bertha may be in need of a new coat:aidan
