How can a prospective buyer know if the model he's looking at has servo-assisted ABS or not (where ABS is fitted)?

Were there certain years where the ABS system wasn't servo-assisted? What were those years? Was it just the earlier models?

Are all GSA ABS models servo-assisted, given that they're generally later models?

Are the brakes on models without ABS fitted still servo-assisted?

I'm not necessarily getting hung up on the servo quagmire - I just want to know what I'm looking at & talking about.

Thanks for any replies.

Servo brakes are only used with ABS from 2003.
Post 2003 models will have servo/abs. Unless it was ordered with no abs, in which case it'll have plain and simple simple straight forward brakes fitted.

Pre 2003 models will have plain and simple ABS with no servo and have simple straight forward brakes fitted.
Unless it was ordered without ABS, in which case it'll have the same simple straight forward brakes as the ABS models, but, obviously, without ABS.

Easy way Switch on the Ignition on the bike

If it has pre servo ABS then there should be two Rectangular red lamps that flash on and off together, If there are two rectangular red lamps and they flash on off alternately then that's an ABS fault code stored and it needs checked or the system reset

If it has Servo brakes fitted then there will be a lamp that flashes quickly 5 or 7 times and then settles to a regular flash (Unless you have a brake lever pulled and it will just blink quite quickly*** and you will hear this whirring whizzy noise from below the tank

*** (as it cannot "see" the switch while doing its self checks as they are normally connected when the brake is off (the reverse off normal brakes!)

Thanks guys - nice clear info.

I'm sure it's easy for the forum old-timers to get plenty pissed off when noobs ask questions on tired topics.

So when inquiring about a potential bike prior to viewing, I imagine the owner/seller should know what brakes he has on his bike (and thus be able to tell a buyer who may not want a servo-equipped bike)?

If you want to look and listen to the servo's then let me know. I'm in D.13 but can meet you somewhere FO a coffee if you want. Luke

Another daft one then...
Can you have the pre-2003 ABS "retro-fitted" to a post 2003 bike?

mines 2002 with servo fitted works fine 40.000 on the clock
BMW model year changes in September.
Last non servo ABS brakes were produced in 9/2002.
And first servo ABS brakes were also produced in 9/2002 for model year 2003.

Yeah, but don't rely on them to tell you the Whole Story, especially if they've had issues with the ABS/Servo Unit.
Do your Homework (better than I did) before you view, then you'll know exactly what to look for.
