My 2015 GSA with 31k on the clock without a quickshifter now won't stay in 4th gear, pops into neutral as soon as I open the throttle then pops back into 3rd. All other gears are a lot harder to select. Sometimes slips out of 5th too. Was fine till this evening, unfortunately I was 100 miles from home when it started but I managed to limp home changing gears as rarely as I could get away with and skipping past 4th. Seemed to be fine in 1st, 2nd 3rd and 6th.
New tyres were fitted a couple of days ago. Was serviced less than 1000 miles ago.
Any ideas on what the problem could be and how many children I have to sell to pay for it to be fixed are welcome.

Until the box is stripped, you really won't know what the issue is. Usually self changing on/off the throttle is induced by excessive end float in the gear sets in my experience, sometimes a thrust washer/shim.

The trouble is, other damage then ensues, such as the gear dogs mentioned above, but hopefully nothing too drastic as it sounds like you took care to protect things.

Assuming you don't have extended warranty, I guess it's a chat with you local dealer (Wollaston NN) or if that's too painful, maybe Motoscot at Luton........... https://www.motoscot.co.uk/

selector fork for 4th & 5th gear me thinks. Not sure how big a job though....

can't be that hard,, just the time I guess... you'll have to take the engine out but its only nuts and bolts ;)

Try Bike Motor Works, Long Lodge Farm, Main Rd, Grendon, Northampton NN7 1JW, 07890 085891. not far from MK. a mate used him and said he was good. Let us know how you got on.

you'll do it in a day... easy... and think how much you will learn about your machine in the process!!..

Thanks for the help so far. Was hoping it was something I could do myself or something simple but sounds like it's a big job.
Bit annoyed that a premium bike that has been looked after and always serviced by a main dealer would destroy it's gearbox after 30,000 miles. I've had 5 grand SV650s do more miles than that without breaking a sweat. Nevermind, always knew GS ownership would come with a premium.

Replacing engines on badly finished gs lc models takes a dealer at least a days labour , that does not include subsequent strip down of the engine and rebuild.
It is not a simple job and will take a competent diy mechanic with suitable tools a decent amoumt of time and require a hand to lug the motor in and out

This is Ian's place, ex-Mottorad mechanic and he is very good with a lot of work arounds.

I know.. they don't half work slow these days!... we were allowed 1.5 hours for a clutch on a MK1 Escort in the day.. but go it down under 1 hour in the end ;)

Don’t want to alarm you had same problem at 19k on a 2013,stripped 3 cogs damaged charging unit, ended up with dealer installing used gear box I provided from moto works and a new charging unit. Dealer said never had thi problem before?begining to wonder

You could still see the ground below the engine then, a bit more room to work.
